POSTPONEMENT OF TRAINING

APPEALS MADE FOR STUDENTS

TERRITORIAL SERVICE Many appeals by students lor a short postponement of their territorial training were dealt with at a meeting of the Christchurch Manpower Committee yesterday. The members of the committee are Messrs J. S. Barnett (chairman), S. L. Wright and G. T. Thurston, Captain G. H. Anderson represented the Army. The following appeals made on behalf of students were dismissed conditionally, the appellants not to be required to enter camp before the dates indicated;—

January I—James Graeme Thomson, William Brian Dunn, Michael Robert McG. Turnbull, Gavin William A. Taylor, William James Lanyon Smith. November I—Lordon Cyril Slatter, Michael Coburn Tipping. Henry Alden Lascelles Wily, Robert Haste Stonyer, Alan Harding Swaney, John Teal, Claude Warwick Weston, Keith Alexander Wilson, Francis Reginald Coales, Alan Cecil Morris. Alan Herbert Wooff, Brian James Moore, Roderick Hamilton Stuart, David Graham Stevens, William Henderson Wadworth, Herbert Callan Pascoe, Peter Graham Roberts. December I—Eugene Sefton Tillman, Ronald Arthur Chapman, Gerald Peter Eggleton, Douglas Hamilton, Thomas Russell Harris, Allan Douglas Hunter, Eric Malcolm Livingstone, Philip Randolph Linyard, Frederick James Geddes, James Thomas Kearney. Harry Douglas Keningston, John Bird Lovell-Smith, Rhys Emlyn Griffiths, Alan Edward Law Britton. The appeal of William Joseph Moloney was dsmissed, appellant having been posted to the Expeditionary Force. Leave was granted to withdraw the following appeals which were struck out.—Dixon Neil Whiting, Keith George Beresford Wilson and Gregory Wright. William Trevor Williams and Harry Noel Jackson had their appeals struck out because of their medical grading. Also because of medical grading, the appeals of the following were adjourned sine die. —Geoffrey Roland Agassiz, Archibald John Ware, Frederick Houden Davey. Cecil John Palmer, Robert Kent Wilson, David O. Stephens, Walter Simpson, John Davies, William John Cyril Wirfskill, and Eric William Roberts. Appeals by the Director of National Service for the following Post and Telegraph employees, whose calling up at present was deemed not to be in the public interest, were adjourned sine die—Allan Freeman Clarke, William George West, Alfred Pelvin, Allan David Martyn, Robert George Thomas Barr, John Raymond McGinn, Norman Link, Gordon William Duff. A similar appeal for David Sherlock Diack was dismissed, advice having been received that appellant’s training in telegraphy was- now complete. Youths, on Farms

Appeals by farmers for the following employees were dealt with as! follows:—John Henry Ensor, not to go into camp before March 1; Ernest Alan Percey, adjourned sine die; Douglas Claude Harris, not before May 1; Charles Alexander Whyte, not before February 1; Lance Henry Swift, sine pie. Appeals were made by the following firms for employees, and dealt with as follows: —Booth. Macdonald and Company, Ltd., Norman Dennis Wood and Robert Joseph Jack (not before January 1); James Hectpr Johnston and Barrie Osborne Guy. to enter camp as soon as possible; Walter Stuart McCallum (not before January'!). Andersons, Ltd.. George Henry :31ack, Roger Lycett Evans, January .1; Ernest Thomas Parrott, Horace Alfred Rickerby and Geoffrey Buchanan Williams, October; Brian' Arthur Henry and Lawrence Leonard Smaill, January; Francis McGrath, dismissed (appellant being now in camp). Scott Bros., Ltd., Wilfred Noel Herbert and Frederick Joseph William Jones, January 1; F. C. Penfold and Company, Maxwell Alfred Tippett (dismissed); Neale, Gordon Gilray; Leslie William Jesson and Arnold Walter Knight, adjourned, to be reviewed in three months. The services of John Bertie Stiven, a clerk liv-,the State Fire Office, appealed for by tl)e Director of National Service,! was-jmstponed until the first of other clerks from-the same office returns to work after territorial training. Similar appeals for Peter Maxwell Nottingham and Douglas Reeves (Social Security clerks) were dealt with on similar lines, Reeves to go into camp when the first other clerk returns from training, and Nottingham not before the second other man had returned. An appeal for Arthur Edward Ackerman, a technical trainee in the National Broadcasting Service, was adjourned to be reviewed in October. The service of Jeffrey Ward, employed by Atkinson and Son, was deferred until January 1; that of Arthur John Hedges, till January 1; thatiof Lester Theodore Hannibal till January 1; that of George Wright till December 1; that of Willian) M. Stocks till December 1; that of Arnold Andrew Swanston till January 1; and that of Keith Stafford Styles till September 1. Appeals in each case were lodged by the employer. In the case of Wright, the boy’s father appealed, asking that the employer withdraw , the application for deferment, but it was stated that if the boy went into camp now other employees of the same firm would be thrown out ,of work. An appeal by Alloy Steel, Ltd., for Peter Ronald le Cren was adjourned for three months, the firm to make every effort to replace him in that time.
