MONDAY (Before Mr E. C. Levvey, S.M.), PROBATION GRANTED

Lan Carr Douglas appeared for sentence, having pleaded guilty to. a charge of converting a car valued at £IOO, the property of Donald John McClelland, at Black’s Point on July 3. He pleaded guilty -to six additional charges of obtaining goods and money by valueless cheques, and one of obtaining credit by fraud. Detective-Sergeant J, McClung said that the accused had been working on a share-milking contract in the North Island, where he had a home, a good wife, and two children. He had opened a legitimate cheque account. Unfortunately he had gone to a rape meeting and got into bad company. To pay his expenses he had issued valueless cheques. “If he goes to gaol these people will lose their money,” said Detective-Sergeant McClung, suggesting a form of punishment which would require repayment of the money obtained, totalling £3O 14s 6d. “It is taking a risk, but I will give you one more chance,” said the Magistrate. On one charge, of obtaining petrol and oil valued at £1 7s, and £3 13s in money from Kenneth Norman G'ouk, service station proprietor, of Matamata, Douglas was placed on probation for six years, on condition of repayment of £3O 14s 6d. On the other counts he was convicted and discharged, A young man, whose name was ordered to be suppressed, was placed on probation for two years for stealing a bicycle. REMANDED A charge of wilfully setting fire to a shop and dwelling at 87 Fitzgerald avenue, the property! of Colin Campbell, was faced by John Augustus Brien and. Florence Eileen Brien. They were each remanded to August 25, bail being granted to each in the sum of £SOO, with one surety of £SOO. Mr G. N. Holmes appeared , for both the accused.

Godfrey Jamieson pleaded guilty to stealing £lO, the property of the New Brighton Municipal Brass Band. He was remanded in custody for a week to enable a report to be made. George Thomas Watts, on a charge of breaking and entering a house by day, was remanded to August 25. John Russell Vance (Mr K. G. Archer) was charged with stealing three' cheques and a sum of money, of a total *3- -

value of £2B ss, the property of Ernest Boulton. He was remanded for a week on bail of ,£SO in his own recognisance and one surety of £SO. Leonard Frederick Martin, charged with obtaining £5 by fraud from Clifton Garfield Manhire, by falsely representing that he was employed by the Linen Flax Section of the Department of Industries and Commerce, was also remanded for a week. Detective-Ser-geant McClung said that other charges were pending. NAME SUPPRESSED A woman whose name was ordered to be suppressed was convicted and i ordered to come up for sentence if called on within 12 months' for the theft of household requisites valued at £ll 8s 9d.
