CROSS-COUNTRY RUNNING
FIRST SOUTH ISLAND JUNIOR
CHAMPIONSHIP
(F 0.0. R.) TIMARU, August 18. Excellent entries have been received for the Temuka-Timaru road race and South Island junior cross-country championship, which will be held at Timaru on Saturday. Almost every South Island club has entered teams for both events and many brilliant juniors have entered individually for the South Island championship. As it is the first time in the history of the sport in New Zealand that a junior South Island or North Island championship has been arranged, the event is creating considerable interest; The race is the direct result of the support given to the Timaru Harrier management committee by both the Otago and Canterbury Centres, whose officials have recognised the necessity of a central course to save young runners the hardship of travelling 200 miles to race. Entries for the Temuka-Timaru road race have been received from almost every harrier club in Christchurch, Dunedin, and Timaru. G. L. Austin (Caversham) and A. R. Geddes (Civil Service) have both entered and should provide a keen contest for fastest time.
