ARMY SPORTS MEETING

EXPEDITION AH Y FORCE ATHLETES RUNNERS AND SWIMMERS COMPETE [N.Z.E.F. Official News Service.] CAIRO. July 25. Boxers, swimmers, and athletes serving in the New Zealand Epeditionary Force have competed in successful sports meetings held in the last week or two. An inter-unit athletic meeting was held to prepare for an important fixture in August, boxers fought trial bouts for the selection of a team to meet the Union. Defence Force team, and swimmers took part in a carnival at the main New Zealand camp. In the pleasant surroundings of a suburban sports club grounds, units from one of the camps held the athletic meeting yesterday, Major-Gene-ral B. C. Freyberg, accompanied by Mrs Freyberg, was present during the afternoon and showed keen interest in the events. The meeting will serve as a useful indication of the best men available to participate in the important programme at Prince Farouk Stadium on August 5. Competition was keen and interest was increased by the presence of several well-known New Zealand athletes, among them T. A. Allen, Empire Games track representative, Frank Sharpley, New Zealand hurdles champion, and A, J; Darby, well-known New Zealand athlete of-several years back. Best all-round performance of the day was that of Masters, who won the 100 yards in the excellent time of 10 2-ssec, and in addition won the hop, step, and jump, and the long jump, and ran second in the 220 yards. Another outstanding performance was that of A. L. Fagg, who, after winning the pole vault at 10 feet, went on to clear the bar at 10ft 6in. Results were;— 100 Yards.—First heat: Smith 1, Berryman 2.
