WEDNESDAY ' c \ ‘ (Before Mr H. A. Young, SM.) WOMAN CHARGED Mabel Darling (Mr D. W. Russell) pleaded not guilty to two charges, first, of having been found drunk in a public place on August 5, and, second, of having used obscene language. : Constable T. H. Swan said, in evi- - dence, that in response to a telephone call he went to Wilson’s road, where: he found the accused very drunk. She was without shoes, her clothes were, mud-stained, and when he tried to arrest her, she resisted, and used the language complained of. William Smith, a brother-in-law of , the accused, said that when Darling visited his house before her arrest she was very drunk and was using filthy language. To Mr Russell, Smith said that' to keep Darling quiet he tied her up with • some rope, but he denied using any force. He certainly did not hit or pummel her. Darling, who admitted a previoui conviction in 1931 for using obscene language, was found guilty on each count. On the drunkenness charge she was fined 10s and ordered to pay costs, in default imprisonment for 48 hours, and for using obscene language she was convicted and ordered to come, up for sentence if called on within 12 months, a condition being that she take out a prohibition order for that period. REMANDED Robert Harold Russell, a labourer, ,v on the application of the police was remanded for a week on a charge of converting to his own use a motorcar, valued at £l5O, the property iof Margaret Annie Hitchcock. Russell raised an objection to bail, saying -that he. did not convert the motor-car in question. He said that he was working the night he was alleged to have converted the motorcar, which had been found on fire at Sumner, and immediate proof of this, he said, could be had by inter- ' viewing his employer. Detective-Sergeant J.' McClung said that the remand was necessary to complete inquiries, and the remand was granted, bail for the accused being allowed in his own recognisance of £SO, with one surety of ( £SO, IDLE AND DISORDERLY For being idle and disorderly in that he begged in a public place, Thomas Gordon Boyd, a labourer, aged 53, was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence/if called on within 12 months, and was .ordered to take out a prohibition order for that time.
