TURF GOSSIP

Answer to Correspondent “Jack," Christchurch—Egmont Cup; Piastre; Taranaki Cup: Night Pilot.

At Riccarton Yesterday Conditions were much improved for track work at Riccarton yesterday, and a large number of horses were exercised on the sand. A grass track was available for galloping, but only a few trainers used it. The outside of the course proper will be thrown open this morning, and the main steeplechase course will also be available. Some interesting schooling is likely. The course will also be open on Saturday. Hurdlers In Action

Night Dress (A. Leach) and Master Dingle (A. Stove) were companions over six hurdles yesterday. Both gave clean and fast displays, that of the latter being a marked improvement on his jumping last Saturday, when he failed to handle any of his fences correctly. Ferriby (A. Stokes) had Red Dragon (E. Jennings) as a mate over six hurdles. He gave his usual spectacular display, and had to be held back to Red Dragon, who nevertheless shaped creditably. Off the Scene

Golden Glow been under treatment for an injured foot since his race in the Homeby Steeplechase, 'and is not likely to race at next week’s meeting. A Young Pilot It is not often that an apprentice has a mount in a Grand National Steeplechase, but J, L, Strathern is likely to be seen up on Astral Flame in next week’s race. Strathern is apprenticed to Mr W. E. Hazlett, and has shown marked ability both in jumping and flat races. Winter Cup Riders

With Wild Talk out of the Winter Cup C. V. Wilson has been booked to ride Treasurer. Other engagements for the race include L. J. Ellis, Haughty Winner; J. Jennings, Gay Parade: W. Ellis, Merry March; H. Hibberd, St. Cloud; T. Kilgour, Sunny Knight: W. Broughton, Gayest Son; P. Atkins, Noble Fox. An' Attractive Card

Final payments and acceptances for the Grand National Steeplechase meeting taken last evening, ensure some excellent fields for the opening day next Tuesday.-' There were no surprise defections from the Grand National Steeplechase and one of the two, Surcoat, is an acceptor for the Enfield Steeplechase. Bridegroom and Dauber, who were doubtful propositions up to last week-end. are welcome acceptors, and the nine to face the starter should provide a spectacular contest. There *were 14 withdrawals from the Winter Cup, but several of these figure in the Paparua Handicap. The Cashmere Plate has closed with 35 acceptors, and as the safety number at the six furlong post is 30. provision will have to be made to run the race in two divisions. The Avonhead Handicap has also 35 acceptors, and as the safety number at the sevenfurlong post is 32, similar provision will have to be made. There were only two defections from the Grand National Hurdle Race, leaving a wellbalanced field of 14. An Improving Jumper Ruling Star, who acted as runnerup to Astral Flame last Saturday, was trained as a young horse by F. D. Jones, of Riccarton, but failed to live up to his reputation. He was sent back to his breeder. Mr G. F. Moore, and later sold to Mr. P. Curtis, of Christchurch, who gave him to T. R. George to train. He was over hurdles before being put to steeplechasing, and appears likely to do better over country than over the battens. Ruling Star was second to Riotous in the Egmont Steeplechase, second to Aussie Ra in the : Adamson Steeplechase at Egmont, second to Pertinax in the Melville Steeplechase at Waikato, third to Dark Rose and En Tour in the Waikato Steeplechase, second to Lady Callaghan in the Wanganui Steeplechase, and fourth in the Awapuni Steeplechase. He is a seven-year-old gelding by Chief Ruler, from Phrosa, by Limond from Cowl, dam of several good winners, and as he seems to be improving with , each race, he should open his account as a steeplechaser during next week’s meeting. Names Claimed

Recent names claimed include Pell Mell, by Man’s Pal from Pelmet; Sequel, by Night Raid from Gold Pit; Thumbs Up, by Man’s Pal from Night Effort; and Wing Commander, by Sky Pilot from Falsgrave. For Riccarton

The following horses Were shipped south from Wellington last night:— Master Cyklon, Darag, Centrepoise, Prince Shad, Silver Night, Pioneer, Hyderabad, Mansura, Sceptre, King Rey, Esquire, and Son and Heir. A. Jenkins will ride Centrepoise in the Winter Cup.—P.S.S. Deliberate Doping

The doping of the Victoria Grand National-favourite. Cheery Jack, caused a sensation in Australia. It is thought the horse was got at tvhlle his attendant was away for about 20 minutes making a change of clothing before going to the racecourse. The attendant believes a drug was given in a thistle or some such thing, not through a needle. The horse was flighty on the way to the course. Evidently the drug had begun to work. At the course the blacksmith had a difficult job to get any shoes on him. The horse was either in pain or so wildly excited that he could not be kept still. Usually he is docile and easily shod. A veterinary examination was carried out, temperature and swabs taken and a report made to the V.R.C. stewards that the horse was not in a fit state to race.

Records In Sydney It is claimed that both the trainer, B. R. Payten, and the apprentice Jockey, J. Thompson, have established record figures for the 1940-41 season in New South Wales, Payten trained 46 winners, half the number scoring at Randwlck, Thompson claims to have ridden more winners in the metropolitan area than any other horseman. He had 709 mounts and was first, second, or third on 319 occasions, an extraordinarily high percentage. Nevertheless, a wager of £1 on each of his mounts at starting price on metropolitan courses showed a loss of £76 for the season. A curious circumstance is that Thompson rode 105 winners (with two dead-heats) for first, 105 (with two dead-heats) for second, and 105 In third place.

Three on End At the A.J.C. Warwick Farm meeting at Randwick on Saturday three consecutive winners were sired by Beau Pere, namely, Justitia, winner of the Tellers’ Handicap for three-year fillies; Beau Son, winner of the Tellers’ Handicap for three-year colts and geldings; and Grand Fils, winner of the Farm Encourage Handicap, in Which the Iliad gelding Patrician was placed third. Beau Son distinguished himself by beating the champion colt Yaralla, who was third.

TROTTING NOTES

A Strong Team L. A. Maidens, who took his team to Greymouth to complete training for important engagements ahead, will be represented by • a useful team at Addington on Saturday. He allowed Peter Smith to drop out of the All. Age Stakes, but h:j colours will be carried by Frisco Boy, who is also engaged in the Trial Handicap, 4min 34sec class, later in the day. Frisco Boy has not shown form for some time but, when trained by M. B. Edwards, he won good races, including the All Age Stakes at Ashburton. Back to his best, Frisco Boy is a possibility in any company. Peter Smith’s only engagement on Saturday is in the August Handicap, and from 24 yards behind, a 4min 27sec mark, he is a prospect, although he will be called on to meet some of the b * pacers in commission. Peter Smith is a genuine racehorse. Jesse Owens will carry the stable colours in the Queen Mary Handicap. He has been a disappointment for some time past, but is reported to be back to his best. Palomar, a really good stayer, will be coupled with Frisco Boy in the Trial Handicap, while Great Blaze will race in the Selwyn Handicap. This pacer enjoys a big reputation that results have not yet justified.

From Belfast C. S. Donald’s stable Is always well represented at trotting meetings, and he is probably the biggest supporter of trotting in New Zealand. ■ From his strong stable, the following will face the barriers on Saturday:—Distributor, Superior Rank, Marlene, Plutus, Accountant, Ferry Post, Biworthy, Tan John, and Clockwork. An Australian Some interest will be taken on Saturday in the form displayed by the Australian pacer, Springfield Globe, trained by R. B. Berry. This horse showed rare stamina in winning the Inter-Dominion Championship at Hobart, but no very good idea of his ability has been gained from his few public appearances In New Zealand. Berry has had him long enough to form his own idea as to the faults and failings of the Australian crack, who on appearances is a champion. Berry will not depend altogether upon Springfield Globe this week, for included in his team are Walter Wrack. Kilrea, Huguenot, Great Jewel, Sandusky, and Parrish Guide.

Trained at Oamaru • x R. J. Humphreys has had his team in training at Oamaru for the last two weeks, and during his stay there the weather was seldom bad enough to interfere with training operations. His team is reported to be in excellent fettle, and those that will carry-his colours include Aspirant. Southern Chief, Donald Dhu, and Mongolian. ,T. H. Gunning will also have a useful team engaged, the number including King Potts, Fremont, Golden Mist. Mendel, and Gold Pot. From the North Reception is at New Brighton, and appears to have done a lot of work. A good solid trotter, Reception has raced well without much luck.

Bracketed , ah Bracketed horses in the All Age Stakes at Addington on Saturday will include:—Plutus and- Marlene and Huguenot and Great Jewel, while in the August Handicap the following will be coupled:—Accountant ana Ferry Post and Springfield Globe and Sandusky. In the Stewards’ Handicap the brackets will include Tan John and Biworthy, while in the Trial Handicap Grand Dame and Adversity. Frisco Boy and Palomar, and Special Edition and Stormtost will be coupled. .
