MR JACK STEEL

The largest fbneral seen at Greymouth for many years took place yesterday, when Mr Jack §teel was buried at Karoro Cemetery. The procession included more than 100 cars, and was approximately a mile long. Representatives of almost all the sporting bodies in the district attended. The New Zealand Rugby Union was represented by the president, Mr W. Craddock (Westport), the West Coast Rugby Union by the president (Mr A. A. Adams) and members, the Westland Sub-Union by Messrs A. H. Lawn (president), and E W. Heenan (secretary), and the Duller Rugby Union by Mr F. MeEnaney (president). Mr E. C. Holder represented past All Backs. Among the ’other bodies officially represented were the Licensed Victuallers’ Association, the Greymouth Golf Club, the West Coast Rugby League, the Masonic Lodge, and all Rugby clubs in the disThe services of the Anglican Church were conducted at the residence and at the graveside by the Rev. Paul Kirkham. The Masonic service was read at the graveside by Bro. T. H. Jones, P.M. The pall-bearers were: Messrs R. R. King (All Blacks), T. McIntosh (Star Rugby Club, Greymouth), M. Olsen (West Coast Rugby Union), W. Reynolds v (Auxiliary Fire Brigade), W. J. Steer, and J. .Duncan (Masonic Lodge), x , , Many hundreds of telegrams and floral tributes were received from all parts of the Dominion, including wreaths from the following:—West Coast, Buffer, and Canterbury Rugby Unions; Celtic, Blaketown, Cobden, and Star Football Clubs (Greymouth), Mount Herbert Cricket Club, Albion Football Club (Christchurch), West Coast Rugby League, manager and members 1924 All Blacks; Licensed Victuallers’ Associations, Greymouth and Hokitika; Greymouth Trotting Club, Canterbury Owners’, Breeders, and Trainers’ Association; football teams, Cxteymouth Main School; Rector, Staff and Pupils. St Andrew’s College (Christchurch): Greymouth Golf Club, Greymouth Masonic Lodges. Greymouth Fire Brigade, Greymouth Auxiliary Fire Brigade, Greymouth Jockey Club, Greymouth Surf Club- Westland Rugby Sub-Union and Westland footballers, in addition to about 150 other wreaths. Bugby Union’s Sympathy The management committee of the West Coast Rugby Union did not proceed with the business at its usual weekly meeting. After passing a resolution of condolence with the relatives of Mr Steel, the meeting adjourned. Similar votes of condolences have

been passed, with accompanying tributes to Mr Steel, by the following bodies:—West Coast Rugby Referees’ Association; Westland Rugby SubUnion; Greymouth Jockey Club; West Coast Rugby League. The annual meeting of the Greymouth Licensed Victuallers’ Association was postponed, because of Mr Steel’s death.
