LINEN FLAX FIBRE

Sir,—l noticed Mr Glasgow - bought three samples of - fibre, five tons of which was produced by the new natural flax process, which cuts out a great deal of labour, and produces an inferior fibre. He stated at the time that the trade knew little of this production. Why produce this inferior article in a new industry, that our country has yet to leam more about, when it would be to our advantage to follow the tank retting process which has obtained in Ireland for many years? The time allowed for retting in Ireland is 10 days submerged, not four or five days as stated in The Press” of April 5. The request from the Imperial Government that tankretted fibre should be given preference to fibre produced from the. other two processes should be sufficient to stop even the one factory at Leeston producing natural fibre.—Yours, etc., V H W! McGREGOR FARROW. ' Hanmer Springs, August 2, 1941.
