RACING AND TROTTING

ASHBURTON RACES

STEEPLECHASE WON BY golden 6low The Ashburton County Racing Club was favoured with ideal conditions for its winter fixture on Saturday, and there was a large, attendance. A heavy frost left the; track in a frozen condition, but under the Influence of a strong sun the effect gradually disappeared, and although the ground was cutting up as the racing progressed,'the going was as shown' by the comparatively fast times reco-ded. Speculation was brisk from the, outset, 'and .but for the impounding of the dividends declared on the seventh race, which restricted investments on the concluding event, the day's total would have been considerably larger than that handled, £15,793 10s, as against £14,715 at last yeaUs meeting. At the conclusion of the -seventh race, the Maronan Handicap, won by Gay Parade, a protest was lodged against the winner on the grounds that he was not trained by the owners as set out in the race book, and after a short hearing the stewards announced that the paying out of the dividends on the race would be delayed indefinitely, as some information regarding the ownership of the horse had to be secured from the Racing Conference in Wellington, and this was not possible until after the week-end. NOTES ON. THE RACING

Fundy Bay Win* Mungatoon, favourite for the Hinds Hurdles, was hear the rear of the field over the first half of tho journey because of faulty jumping, and did not improve his position until the closing stages. Night Dress was the early leader-and he and Donadea raced abreast through the back stretoh and to the home turn, well clear of Fundy Bay, with another gap to Surr voy. Donadea shook oft Night Dress turning for home and Fundy Bay ran into second place, with Survoy close up and Mungatoon making un leeway, Donadea was first over the last fence, but soon Succumbed to Fundy Bey, who won going away. Mungatoon finished on imp third Piece, a length In front ofSurvoy. with Night Dress half 8 length back. Dropped Catch and Prince Ruepalf were tn the rear throughout, Easy ‘for Rebel Uady The Noyipe Stakes resoived iteeif Into a procession. Rebel Lady rusRM out

from the barrier and soon opened up a break. She was several lengths in front entering the straight, from lady Nottava and Myraid, with another gap to Royoney and Gunga Din. Rebel Lady was never in danger, and with her rider repeatedly looking round in the run home, she was allowed to ease up 'nearing the post and still had a substantial margin to spare. Gunga Din comfortably accounted for second place and in a close struggle for third money, Myraid gained a half-head verdict from Royoney with Solerity a head away. Lunaria headed the remainder. Square Cut, Lord Dundas, and Leander were slow to move off. ■ Lyndhurst Trot

Canister was the early, leader In the Lyndhurst Trot from Ordnance. Countless, Star Performer, and Jesse Gentry, the slowest to move oil being Western Boy, King Axworthy, All Serene. Keewah, and Straight. Princess Marltza made a fast run turning into the back stretch, and was well out in front rounding the home turn from Canister, Le Compe, Countless, Ordnance and Serapeum. Countless, had taken charge when the run home was commenced, and easily holding oil Serapeum, won with something in reserve. Le Compe, who broke over the last half furlong, was a fair third, three lengths in front of Star Performer, with Sailor's Fancy, Princess Marltza, and Canister following. Impressive Performance

Valcron justified his staunch favouritism for the Mayfield Hack Handicap by an impressive win. He only had Lights Out and Good Health behind him half a mile from home, and strangely enough these three filled the places. Avenal and Nightglass were the early leaders and the latter, under a strong hold, piloted the field to the home turn, where she weakened. Valcron then moved up smartly to be in front entering the straight from Lights Out, who also put in a fast run on the fence. These two had the finish to themselves. Valcron always held his rival safe. Good Health, who covered a lot of extra ground, made his usual late run to get up for third money two lengths in front of Roman Son and Scarteen. Golden Glow’s Steeplechase

The seven acceptors for the, Dromore Hack Steeplechase paraded, but only three got round without mishap.. Recollection was the first to go out, falling at the first of the stand double, the fourth fence on the journey. Two fences later Waka, when in the lead with The Sandwlchman ran off and the latter turned a somersault. while Panara fell over The Sandwichman. This left Golden Glow, Superex, and Guste to carry on, and they completed the course in that order, Golden Glow having a comfortable win. Panara later got round saffely, and was credited with fourth place. Golden Glow was ridden by A. Stove, who was successful on Fundy Bay in the hurdle event. The Sandwlchman suffered a broken hind leg, cailsed, It was thought, by Panara landing on him, and he Was destroyed. Field Outclassed Citizen, one of the outsiders In the Moreton Hack Handicap, was first out and led throughout. He was followed into the straight by Miss Tasta, On Call, Atreus. and Big Joe, and was not called upon in the run home. Treasurer and Big Joe came with late efforts and had a long tussle for second money, the former gaining a narrow verdict, On Call was two lengths away, a neck In front of Miss Tasta. with Ann Mie and Blue Coat next. Ann Mle and Haughty Lad were never dangerous. End to End

Gay Parade was first out In the Maronan Handicap and first home. He was followed Into the straight by Waitoru, Auctor, Sham Boy, Boloyna', and Flame Queen, and although Waitoru and Boloyna reduced the gap in the run to the post. Gay Parade was not seriously troubled. Boloyna was finishing better than Waitoru for second, but Just failed to get up. Sham Boy was only a neck away, a head in front of Kllrobe, who caused a long delay at the post and was badly left. A protest was lodged against the race being awarded to Gay Parade, on an allegation that he was not trained by his owners, as stated in the race-book, and the hearing of the appeal was adjourned to enable some Information to be obtained from the Racing Conference regarding the ownership of the horse. Yon ifan Surprises

Jack’s Pal, favourite for the Winchmore Trot, tried to win from the early stages, but after leading .to the home turn, surrendered his place to Recluse, who led him into the straight, with Native Man and Mervyn Derby, next. Marvyn Derby and Jack's Pal both broke under pressure, and just as Native Man looked the likely winner. Yop Yan came with a telling late run and gradually wearing down the leader won going away. Wainonl Jack also finished fast to gain third nuney, half fi length In front of Jack’s Pal and Great Waltakl.
