Tongue Over the Bit • , ' The • A.J.C. stewards have decided that in future a standard type of device must be used to prevent a horse from getting his tongue over the bit in a race. The device consists of a rubber band (through which the horse’s tongue is passed), attached by a ring to the bit. The chief steward* (Mr Donohoe) said the, stewards considered some of the devices employed by trainers were not designed to t?et the best out of a horse* The device we have standardised,” Mid Mr. Donohoe "lo used almost exclusively In Queensland, and ifes attalneda wide vogue in New Zealand. I understand it will be recommended by J. T. Jamieson. who trained in New Zealand before coming to Sydney.” Mr Donohoe added that the stewards bad sought to legislate only as to the tying down of the tongue7No objection woilld be offered to thereof a bridle desired to hold the bit in such a position as to achieve the same purpose.

TROTTING NOTES

Bracketed Warline and Jesse Gentry will be bracketed in the Lyndhurst Handicap at Ashburton to-day. Change of Name Western Boy, who will start in the Lyndhurst Handicap at Ashburton today, is a five-year-old by Western King from a Lord Chancellor mare, and at the Ashburton’ Trotting Club’s meeting last month raced under the name >of Spats. After this horse was registered it was found that a horse in Australia had been named Spats, and the owner was asked to change the name. Well Bred

Eifin’s Empress is a well-bred mare by Wrack from Erin's Pointer, a fast placer raced by E. C. McDermott a few years ago. Up to the present Erin's Empress has done little on the race track, but, now in J. Bryce’s stable, she may be heard of in the near future. Novices *

Maiden performers engaged at Ashburton to-day include Warline, by Man o’ War—The Linnet, and Jesse Gentry, by David McElwyn—Matchlight mare (F. Jamieson), Le Compte, by Rey de Oro—hostess (C. Nordquist), Countless, by Jack Potts—Purple Patch (Q. McKendry); Navy Lass, by Man o' War—Windy Morn (R. Townley); Canister, by Jack Potts— Logan Pointer mare (J. Behrns); All Serene, by Rey do Oro— Wrack mare (W. K. Tatterson). A Crack Trotter

One of the best trotters in Australia to-day is White Globe, who has been credited with performances that would place her in the test New Zealand class. In her most recent performance she was handicapped on zzs yards behind in a mile and a half race, and she finished second after recording 3min 19sec. The field was not regarded as good class, but previous to this White Globe had trotted, a mile in 2min Bsec. At the Sydney show she had trotted a mile and a half in 3min 16 l-ssec, and at Harold Park did two-miles in 4min 31 4-ssec, and two weeks later recorded 4mm 32 1-5 sec. Her best winning record over a mile and a half is smin 20 3-ssec, against a field of hoppled pacers.

Of Interest A recent winner at the Harold Park meeting in New South Wales was Van Ayr, by Van Derby from the New Zealand-bred Ayr. who recorded 3mm 25sec for a mile and a half. Feature Events

Feature events in the programme for the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club's August meeting will be the National All-Age Stakes on the first day, the August Free-for-All on the second day, and the Metropolitan Four-year-old Stakes on the concluding day of the meeting,. The All-Age Stakes will be run over a mile and a quarter, and will give Pacing Power his first chance in the new season. It may be a bit early in the year for three-year-olds, and a start of 24 yarda from a four-year-old like Walter Moore, and 36 yards from the older horses, may not be sufficient inducement for R. B. Berry to start his crack juvenile. The Free-for-All will be run over a mile and a quarter, as will the Four-year-old Stakes. In the last-named event, the wl nn | r d* classic race will be 12 yards behind, and the winner of two or more will be asked to concede 24 yards start In the three days’ racing, there will be three races of £650, and no fewer than 10 of £SOO or more.
