QUESTIONNAIRE ON WAR SERVICE

——♦ — FEDERATION OF LABOUR TAKES ACTION

A special meeting of the staff of the Christchurch City Council has been called for to-morrow morning to consider the questionnaire on war service which each member has been asked to fill in. The meeting has been called by the Canterbury District Council of the Federation of Labour, which has also decided to ask the City, Council, at its meeting on Monday evening, to receive a deputation which will make representations in the matter. It is understood that the district council of the federation regards the matter seriously, taking the view that whether or not the information obtained by the questionnaire is used against conscientious objectors, no employer has the right to question employees on matters which the district council of the federation considers personal and private. On the question of the dismissal of Conscientious objec-, tors, it is understood, the district council takes the stand that no employer has the right to dismiss an employee for appealing against war service on grounds of conscience so long as the law of the country entitles him to use such legal machinery. The New Zealand Federation of Labour has also been asked to discuss the' matter. • The deputation to the council will be appointed at the meeting to-mor--row, when it is probable that a decision will be reached on the attitude of the. council’s staff toward the questionnaire.
