RAILAGE OF WINTER FEED

* REQUEST REFUSED BY MINISTER

A request for free railage of feed for stock in the South Canterbury district was refused by the Minister for Agriculture (the Hon. J. G. Barclay), in a letter received at yesterday’s meeting of the South Canterbury executive of the Farmers’ Union.

Inquiries made by him indicated that the position this year was not nearly so acute, said the Minister. There was ample rain in March and favourable growing conditions obtained during April. “It is considered that farmers) have, had the opportunity of making adequate provision. in this respect," Mr. Barclay continued, “and the request for free railage is declined." The following remit, which was presented by the Waimate branch, was carried:— “That the executive be requested again to urge upon the Government the question of free railage of stock and feed, as in the district of Waimate the situation is very bad.”
