WAITEMATA SEAT
— INDEPENDENT CANDIDATE
(P.A.) AUCKLAND. JiAe 20. A former member of the Whangarei Borough Council, the Whangarei Harbour Board, and the Kamo Town Board, Mr P. R. Gardner, of Glorit, has announced his intention of contesting the forthcoming Waitemata by-election as an Independent anti-Socialist candidate. Mr Gardner, who is a farmer, is also . a director of a number of companies. • ~ • The-National Party has decided-not to contest the by-election, but the Democratic Labour Party has chosen Mr N, V, Douglas, of Auckland, as * its candidate.
NINE NAMES BEFORE LABOUR COMMITTEE
(P.A.) AUCKLAND, June 20. Acting bri medicar advice, Mrs Lyon, widow of Captain W. J, Lyon, M.P., has declined a request unanimously made by the Labour Party representatives in the electorate to submit her name for selection as a candidate for the Waitemata seat. This was announced at a meeting of the Waitemata Labour Representation Committee last night. The names of nine nominees were Submitted, but were hot made public. They will be referred to the national executive in Wellington for a final decision. ■ , „ : The national secretary of the. New Zealand Labour Party (Mr Michael Moohan) presided' over a largely attended meeting, and a tribute was paid to the late Captain Lyon. . 1 , Mr A G. Osborne, M.P., was elected organiser for the party’s by-election campaign.
