HOME GUARD
COMPULSORY SERVICE SUGGESTED (F.0.P.R.) WELLINGTON, June 10.An opportunity for the House to discuss the reorganisation of the Home Guard, with a view to making service in it or in some other branch of the Emergency Reserve Corps compulsory, was sought by Mr W. J. Poison (Opposition, Stratford) in an urgent question to the Minister for Defence (the Hon. F. Jones) in the House of .Representatives to-day. Mr Jones said the question was really one for the' ActingPrime Minister (the Hon. W. Nash), as Leader of the House. However, he would be pleased to take an early opportunity of discussing with him whether it would be possible for arrangements to be made for such a debate. A request for more adequate funds to cover the cost of the necessary work carried out by the Home Guard was made in notice of question by Mr J. A. Lee (Democratic Labour, Grey Lynn), on behalf of the Hon. W. E. Barnard (Democratic Labour, Napier). In a note to the question to the Minister for Finance (Mr Nash), Mr Lee said he was credibly informed that in one town the Home Guard had been required to provide, through its own efforts, for the cost of 30,000 cement bags and about 10,000 feet pf heavy timber for use in essential works of public importance..
