UNEMPLOYMENT RELIEF
CITY COUNCIL WORKERS The No. 13 Scheme workers employed by the. works department of the Christchurch City Council now total 228. The Mayor (Mr E. H. Andrews), in his report as chairman of the water supply and works committee to the council last evening reviewed the work being done under unemployment relief throughout the council’s area. Mr Andrews said that some months ago the number of men employed was about 400, but the National Service Department had recalled many of them and sent them to work in the country, and if the men'refused such work they were treated as voluntarily unemployed. The men now employed were distributed as follows:—Harcwood aerodrome 32, Victoria Park 19, Halswell quarries 10, Central Ward 23, St. Albans ward 28, Linwood ward 32, Sydenham ward W, Spreydon ward 23, Wooliton ward 10. New Brighton 32.
