MR ROOSEVELT’S WORK “ MAGNIFICENT ” (P.A.) AUCKLAND, June 9. Captain R. F. B. Baynes, a former Indian Army officer, who was a through passenger in the Mariposa, in an interveiw commended President Roosevelt’s expressed determination to ensure that the defence industries are not affected by strikes, and also the move to place such industries under army control when unofficial strikes occur. Captain Baynes said that more than 80 per cdnt. of American opinion favoured full aid- to Britain. “The percentage against us, from whom the isolationists draw .their strength, are mostly in factories” he said. “They are people who have not been in America for many years and have been drawn from various countries of Europe. But real Americans are with us wholeheartedly." It was true that President Roosevelt had a difficult job to do. but he was doing it magnificently, he added. The exploits of the second Anzacs in Libya, Egypt,, and Greece had aroused tremendous enthusiasm among the. American people, arid had put this part of the 'world on the map.
