CONTROL OF MEAT INDUSTRY
AUTHORITY FOR PRODUCERS’ BOARD SOUGHT (F.0.0.R.) TIMARU, June 6. The following remit was carried unanimously at the annual conference of the South Canterbury executive of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union at Timaru to-day: . “That this meeting urges upon the Government that, in this crisis affecting the meat producers of New Zealand, it give immediate recognition of the Meat, Producers’ Board as the controlling authority of the meat industry, responsible directly to the Minister. We urge this because of our confidence in the board engendered by its successful handling of the country’s meat production in the past, and its thorough knowledge of the requirements of the meat trade, not only m New Zealand, but throughout the world. In our opinion the board is the only fit and proper body to deal with our meat production, and therefore in this matter it should be given the fullest power and responsibility. Other remits carried were;— “That this meeting desires to impress upon the Government the necessity ot taking the farmers of the Dominion into its confidence to the fullest extent upon all matters concerning the production, treatment, consumption, and shipment of all primary produce. It is felt that by this means only will farmers be enabled to assist the war effort to the fullest extent because, owing to the nature of their calling, their plans- for production must be made far in advance.” "That, subject to sufficient safeguards against exploitation, the Government be asked to reconsider abandoning the 40-hour week for the duration of the war." "That the Government be urged to form a National Government for the duration of the war."
