N.Z. PRISONERS FROM CRETE

RED CROSS TAKING ACTIVE STEPS (PA.) WELLINGTON, June 6. Immediately tne news about the position of the men in Crete was made public, ‘the Joint Council of the Order of St. John and the New Zealand Red Cross Society dispatched cablegrams to the International Red Cross m Geneva, the British Red Cross in London, and the Red Cross Commissioner, Cairo. The following reply was received by cablegram from the Prisoners of War Department of the British Red Cross; “Referring to your telegram about New Zealand prisoners ox war in Greece, I am in touch with the Higu Commissioner in London and also Dr. Bernard Myers (.New Zealand Red Cross Commissioner in London), in the meantime I have arranged to service New Zealand war ’prisoners when their whereabouts are known, with clothing and food parcels the same as Britisn prisoners, pending xurther arrangements. The other particulars requested will be given as soon as possible.” In reply to inquiries about the dispatch of letters and parcels to memoers of the New Zealand forces who are prisoners of war, Colonel F, Waite (Patriotic Funds Commissioner overseas) sent the following cable: "Have made all arrangements re‘garding the notification and eventual dispatch of letters and parcels. Until notified that prisoners are at a definite camp in enemy country, via the International Red • Cross at Geneva, neither letters nor parcels can be forwarded. Have arranged for suitable parcels to be sent from here. Letters for soldiers believed to be prisoners should be sent to the base post office here, but I earnestly request that friends do not send parcels until instructed, as forwarding arrangements may break down.”
