The Minister for Defence (the Hon. F. Jones), who has been visiting Dunedin, returned to Wellington by last night’s steamer express, Mr J. Wylie has been re-elected unopposed president of the Northern District Council of the Royal Agricultural Society. The Mayor (Mr E. H. Andrews) has invited the members of the Christchurch City Council to accompany him to his church (St. Albans Methodist) to-morrow evening. The president of the Methodist Conference (the Rev. W. A. Burley, M.A.) will conduct the service. The Mayor is a trustee of the church. Cabled advice has been received at Gore that Major Thomas Fyfe, M.A., has been killed in action in Crete. Major Fyfe, who was a veteran of the last war, was a master at the Gore High School before he enlisted. Private N. Brydges-Jones, a member of the clerical staff of the Christchurch City Council traffic department, was met yesterday by the council staff, when a presentation was made. The Assistant Town Clerk (Mr'E. S. Bowie) presided in the absence in Wellington of the Town Clerk (Mr H. S. Feast). High tributes were paid to Private Brydges-Jones, who was offered the best wishes of the staff. Mr J. C. Findlater (Hawera) was re-elected Dominion Commandant for the third successive term at the annual conference of the Legion of Frontiersmen held at Tauranga. A motion of regret at the death of Pastor J. S. Binnie was passed at a meeting of the Canterbury Auxiliary of the Baptist Union. High tributes were paid to Pastor Binnie for his work for the church. Mr Arthur F. Jarman, senior superintendent of the Provident Life Assurance Company, Ltd., was entertained last evening by the staff of the company on his retirement after 20 years of service. Mr C. T. Paul and Mr E. A. Standring, speaking on behalf of the superintendents and agents, expressed the good wishes of the employees for a happy retirement and made a presentation. Mr Jarman is retiring after an experience of 35 years in the business of life assurance. Inspector T. Gibson, who is to retire shortly from the Police Force, was the recipient of good wishes at the conclusion of business at the annual meeting of the Awarua Licensing Committee at Winton, The chairman of the committee, Mr R. C. Abernethy, S.M., said that although it would be some time yet before the inspector went into retirement, it would nevertheless be his last meeting with the committee. He had known the inspector many years ago in Christchurch and when he was appointed to the Southland district he was pleased to renew his acquaintance. The Bench to a large extent depended on the efficiency of the police and its officials, and it was a pleasure to be associated with Inspector Gibson. In licensing matters he had always been fair. On behalf of the committee he wished the inspector and Mrs Gibson a happy retirement and hoped that they would live long to enjoy it. . . .
