~ — * ' FRIDAY (Before Mr E. ,C. Levvey, S.M.) FAILURE TO ENROL Two cases of reservists failing to enrol in the general reserve, and pleading ignorance of the law, were heard. Leslie Dale and his employer, John Hunter Shaw, were represented by Mr R. A. Young, who said that Dale, like many others, thought his social security registration was sufficient, and Shaw had taken it for granted that Dale was enrolled because he had had a previous employer since the proclamation. On noticing that he had been omitted from ballots, Dale had immediately enrolled. The Magistrate said he could not dismiss the charges, but the penalty would be to pay fcosts, Dale for failing to enrol,. and Shaw for employing an unenroHed reservist. _ Benjamin Hal Brodie, a jockey, was fined £2 for failing to enrol.. He. explained that he enrolled when he saw a paragraph in a newspaper in April. REMANDED On a charge of being drunk in charge of a motor-car in Dundas street, Darcy Nelson Le Comte (Mr C. S. Thomas), a labourer and contractor, aged 45, was remanded to Junfe 9. ~ TRAFFIC CASES Seddon Taylor Adam and Frederick Edgar Tozer were each charged with speeding and with • driving without consideration. Young, S.M.) - AWARD BREACHES Two journeyman painters, James Reid and Leonard Tibbotts, were charged with doing work on a Saturday without a permit from the Labour Department. Both admitted the breach, and said they did not know of the obligation. Mr S. E. McGregor, for the Labour Department, said the case was brought as a warning. Clause 3 of the painters and decorators’ award contained the relevant terms, he said. The Magistrate said that in the circumstances. the defendants would merelv be ordered to pay costs.
