HOME GUARD IN COUNTRY
MORE CO-OPERATION WANTED ■ from authorities The .annual conference of the North Canterbury district of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union yesterday adopted a remit, asking the Government for greater co-operation from the Army and Air Force with the Home Guard in the country districts. . Mr C. McCaskey, who moved the resolution, said that the Home Guard in country districts was not getting the support it should from the military forces. Only public Opinion would persuade the authorities to give cooperation. . Mr J. H. Skinner (Dunsandel) and Mr S. G. Farquhar (Belfast) said that the Home Guard in their districts had had very full support from the military authorities. , - ■, . Mr J. E. H. McGrath said that when a call was made to Home Guard members to turn out and practice trench digging members seemed to have something else to do. It was different if aeroplanes were to be present for divebombing manoeuvres. , Mr W. H. Overton said he did not think the Army recognised the Home Guard. If there was more recognition by the' Army: of. the Home Guard then there , would be greater interest in the guard.
