WAIMAIRI COUNCIL TO APPROACH MINISTER
A deputation from, the Waimairi County Council will at the. first* oppor-: tunity ask the Minister for Public Works (the Hon; Armstrong) to amend the legislation to give the county the “same privilege as cities and certain; borpughs’’/in haying a suitable, sum available; eacn 'year for work, on-roads’'within-its boundaries. ; Cr. W. J. Walter said that the Wai-* mairi County- was 'perhaps ahead of* most other .local; bodies, in that aU its main highways; for which certain money was made , available, were tarsealed. It was fair that ;it should be allowed a sufficient sum to spend' at its discretion on county roads—a privilege the city enjoyed for its roads. In one respect, he thought, Waimairi was in the worst position of all local bodies, as its motorists found £50,000odd in various forms of taxation yearly for the highways fund and got back practically nothing—at any rate, a mere fraction. ‘ The council agreed to Cr. Walter’s suggestion, nominating him and Cr. C. E. Cross as a deputation to see the Minister. Cr. Walter added that Messrs C.Morgan Williams, M.P., and H. S. S. Kyle, M.P., had agreed to support, the deputation.
