RACING AND TROTTING

NORSE WINS FROM AUCTOR

DUKE OF GLOUCESTER CUP ROYAL LANCER AND GOLD FLIGHT SUCCEED ■The South Canterbury Jockey Club Was favoured with Ideal conditions for }J] e “fst day of Its winter meeting at Washdyjce yesterday, and there was a Very satisfactory attendance for a week day. The track was fast without being trard, and there was some excellent racing. The totallsator- handled £12,749, as against £8702 on the corresponding day k)st year, an increase of £4047. Last year’s programme was held in fine weather, but there was a comparatively small attendance. The Duke of Gloucester Cup was the star Item of the day’s card, and the success of the Washdyke candidate, Norse, owned, trained, and ridden by his owner, Mr G. Paul, was popularly received. At the conclusion of the race Mr Paul received toe Duke of Gloucester Cup and a miniature from Mr D. Grant, president of the club, and he also received a goldmounted whip given to the winning horseman.

The Southland visitor, Royal Lancer, was responsible for an outstanding effort In winning the Elloughton Handicap, and another Southlander In Astral Flame, one of the Simper breed, won the Cralgmore Hack Steeplechase after a faultless display. Hie Seadown Handicap provided a surprise result. Gold Flight, another from Southland, winning well from the outsider. Master Hotspur, who has recently been showing something of his early form.

notes on the racing

Green Boa Wins * Dividend was sent out a good favourite for” the Levels Hurdles, but after being in a handy position at the third fence, he was squeezed for room -, and tho obstacle 1 Flagman and Donadea disputed the from the outset until two fences from home, where P° nad *AJf l ™s a alight advantage and the latter lea over the last fence from Flagman. Green Boa and Waka. Donadea was under pressure early In the run home, and Green Boa had no, difficulty -In headlnghlm off and to beat him decisively. Waka finished solidly to deprive Flagman of third money on the post. Red Dragon was nCXt ’ A Sound Performance Hurry Girl draw an outside marble In theClaremont Hack Handicap and that no doubt accounted for the poor support for her. Jolly Time led into the straight from Hurry Girl. Music Hall. Roman Son, and Lady Derby, with Eulogist and Treasurer in the following bunch. Hurry Girl dashed to the front early In the run home and was never in danger. Treasurer finished fast to easily gain second place from Eulogist, who also did good work in the straight. On Call and Roman Son were abreast next in front of Jolly Time, Irish Lass, and Music Hall.

Oplhl Trot The early leaders ‘ln the Oplhl Trot were Swagger Jack, Warform, Catalpa, Bright lass. Rollicking Ray. and Canister, but With half the journey covered warform had charge from Catalpa, 'Swagger Jack. Rollicking Ray, Canister, and Special Agent. Catalpa ran past Warform turning for home and led into the straight from Swagger Jack. Warform, Canister, and ' Special Agent. The rest was easy for Catalpa, with Swagger Jack comfortably beating Special Agent. Canister was four lengths away, a neck .In front of Technique. ...

Royal Lancer’s Success Royal Lancer and King’s Toast shared favouritism In the Elloughton Handicap, but though the former had a meritorious win, King's Toast failed badly after having every chance. With five furlongs to go! Cymric had charge from Royal Lancer, Cherokee. The Wrecker, Trench Fight, Rebel Star, and Prudent Prince, with Aravane In last place. , Cymric was still In front entering tha straight from Cherokee, Royal Lancer, The Wrecker, Prudent Prince, Airline. Trench Fight, and King s Toast, but Inside the distance Royal Lancer showed out and soon had the race In safe keeping. Cherokee held on for second money from Cymric, who beat Prudent Prince by a head. King’s Toast was close up next, with a gap to Wardress and Airline. Arkvane was in last place, Cross-Country Contest Jewish Lad was considered to be a good proposition for the Craigtnore Hack Steeplechase, but alter leading early he gradually drifted and finished a long way from the placed division. Roseman accompanied Jewish Lad until the latter retired and then he went to the front with Astral Flame, this pair leading Into the straight together well clear of Night Scout and Golden Glow. Astral Flame had Roseman beaten over the last fence and carried on to win easily. Golden Glow finished on to get to within half a length of Roseman, with Night Scout a length away. superex, Jewish Lad, Valens. Golden Sight, and Point Blank finished at big Intervals down the course. The Gloucester Cup The Duke of Gloucester Cup provided the greatest interest of the day, and all of the acceptors except Combat were paraded. The race provided plenty of Incidents, the first being when Gay Thread whipped round as the barrier went up, and In going out of the straight Auctor, the then leader, ran out wide and lost a lot of ground, while Trlenna’s rider appeared to lose control of his mount for a while, causing Interference to others. Fundy Bay led into the back stretch from Taxpayer, who, however, met some trouble and lost his position. Fundy Bay entered the straight from Auctor, Big Joe. Norse, Taxpayer, and Islay Downs. Auctor was In , front a furlong from home, but was then challenged by Norse, who, confidently ridden, wore down Auctor to beat him by a neck. Taxpayer was a fair third, a neck In front of Fundy Bay. who was a similar distance in front of Big Joe. Araboa headed the strung-out remainder. Beaconsfleld Trot

Loyal Friend made amends for his Ashburton defeat by a convincing win in the Bfiaconsfleld Tfot He went, to the front six furlongs from home, having a clear lead entering the stfeight from Scapa Flow, Brew Lass, Lisette. Recluse, and Black Label. Loyal Friend was not threatened to easily beat Scapa Flow, with Draw Lass a head in front of the fast-finishing Black .Label. Lisette was next: Loyal Friend, like Catalpa. is trained by M. C. McTlgue. Gold Flight itetoms The Seadown Handicap was a triumph for the light-weight division. Rawhamal was the first'to show out, but at the end of a furlong Master Hotspur find Density passed him and they drew out to set a merry pace. Master Hotspur had a slight advantage from Density, entering the straight, : with Sawhamai, Secret Flight, Sham Boy, and Rebel Mate, handy. Density did not carry on fat/in home and Master Hotspur appeared to have the race in hand until Gold- Flight put in a determined claim on toe. inside. The latter overhauled Master Hotspur about 100 yards from the post and won comfortably...Rawhamal stayed onfor a close third Jdactog. *' head; to front of -iamt fltoihfed very latt.

Safellght. Red Dragon, Tatting. Martimus 7-7. ; TURF GOSSIP A Rough Ride _ The supporters of Prudent Prince in the EUoughton Handicap at Wash- ( dyke yesterday were unlucky not to 1 collect a dividend. He was going well 1 not far from the leaders five furlongs from home, when the tree of ms saddle, a new one, snapped, and his rider, V. Barrington, lost the use of both Irons. Even then Prudent Prince was on hand at the finish and in an- ! other stride would have beaten Cymric for third money. The mishap left Barrington in an unenviable position, - * and to retain his seat and to keep his mount In a forward position for five furlongs without the assistance of his “pedals” was an outstanding performance for an apprentice.

Not a Recommendation Jewish Lad’s display over country at Washdyke yesterday did not point to his prospects over tho Ellerslie fences, and a decision as to whether he will be taken north next week will not be made until after his effort at Washdyke to-morrow. Attractive Snooess Astral Flame, winner of yesterdays steeplechase at Washdyke, was having his first race over country, and his display pointed to his developing into a high-class performer. His dam, Illume, was by Kilbrortey from Imported Simper, and two of her early progeny were Flicker and Chief Light. Astral Flame was ridden by the stable apprentice, J. L. Strathern, and this was the lad’s second mount only over country.

Never Prominent Benevolent did not flatter his army of supporters at any stage of the Duke of Gloucester Cup, He was Blow to move off, was never well placed, and finished a long way from the winner. A Surprising Price Hurry Girl’s double-figure dividend yesterday was one of the surprises of the day, especially as she had a decisive win at Ashburton. Her being drawn wide out possibly had something to do with her position in the betting, but on the other hand, Lady Derby was not far from her in the line, and she was favourite, while Eulogist, also fairly well supported, was alongside Hurry Girl. The Defoe filly was wall ridden by the North Island apprentice, W. J. Stevens, who had a successful innings at the Marlborough meeting last week-end and decided to gd to Timaru before returning north.

Not to Blame Dividend would undoubtedly have taken a prominent part In yesterday’s hurdle race at washdyke but for hiS unfortunate mishap. 116 made a forward move • approaching 5 the ■ third tehee, and O'rden’Bda went with him, and the latter cramped him for room, pausing Dividend to go round the whig..

Improved Waka, with a stronger horseman than previously,, showed a marked lair provement in yesterday’s hurdle race, and there is now a hope that he will pay his way during the winter.'

Dae for b Win ; Dohadea ig building up a record for minor placing® in hurdle events and a win for him will be -popularly received.

Encouraging Jolly rome hag'not been : up long, and her race yesterday, when she led the field in the hack sprint for a good way, was encouraging in view of later engagements.

Lost Caste * .. . King’s Toast’s win In the Timaru Cup last month suggested that he would carry, on his .good work, but hiS’ failure at Ashburton and again at; Washdyke yesterday, caused'much disappointment to all concerned. In yesterday's race he met with some trouble rounding the home turn and had to be taken to the outside to get a run! in the straight, He certainly finlihedj on wxlli- andimay do better to-mor-i row. TROTTING NOTES

Well-deserved Win

Catalpa’s win at Washdyke yesterday did not come out of turn, for though he failed at Ashburton last Saturday his form generally has been good, and his win yesterday suggested that his racing experience has worked the necessary improvement. Now that he has struck a winning vein Catalpa, a good sensible pacer, should be heard of in more pretentious company than he has yet met. Juveniles

Mr J. R. McKenzie is a firm believer in the early education of his pacers and in preparation for the two-year-old classic* of l#4J he already hu tbree yearlings well forward io their t*ain4c, A ftw.daya ago hajoak to Ad- • ::

dington three fillies, all by the American pacer U. Scott The first a bay, Is from May Cbenault, another from a Great Bingen—Grattan Queen tnare, and a third from princess Napoleon. All three were given work suitable for their age, and quarter-miles in'better than 36sec were run. Mr McKenzie also had on the track a seven-months-old colt by U. Scott from Princess Napoleon, and thus early in life he showed that he had the right temperament The early education of pacers is all to the advantage of trainers, whose mam job is to develop the inherent speed.
