PRIZES PRESENTED

CANTERBURY HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY Trophies and prizes won in the recent home gardens competitions, sponsored by the Canterbury Horticultural Society were presented by the president, the Hon. Sir R. Heaton Rhodes, at a most enjoyable gathering held in the Jellicoe Hall last evening. Commen&ng on films of Christchurch home gardens and the Botanic Gardens shown during the evening by Mr E E Wiltshire, Sir Heaton Rhodes said that members would realise after seeing the film that Christchurch was without a doubt the garden city of New Zealand, and for beauty would be hard to beat in any country in the world. One realised there was beauty everywhere, and it was a joy to drive round the city and suburbs to see "the beautiful flowers in the spring, and summer, and the colouring of leaves in the autumn. Whether successful in competitions or not, gardeners got a great amount of satisfaction from their gardens. . ■; The chairman, Mr J. R. Templm, introduced Mr Wiltshire, who gave an interesting commentary on glimpses of home gardens which he had taken in natural colour photography. His film was of particular interest to gardeners, for many of the gardens shown had won prizes in last year’s competitions. A picture of the president against the colourful background of his home, “Otahuna,” was greeted with applause. The secretary, i.i- P. C. Browne, assisted with the presentation of prizes. In addition to home gardens, prizes for ’small factory and railway gardens were also given.
