—♦— —• The Minister for Labour (the Hon. P. C. Webb) arrived in Christchurch by the steamer express yesterday morning. He will accompany Mr W. Holmes, former president of the British Trades Union Congress, on his tour of the South Island. Mr W Holmes, a past president of the Trades Union Congress, had a full day in Christchurch yesterday. Besides carrying out an arranged programme, he met several groups privately, including Mr A. M. Hollander, the president of the Canterbury Manufacturers’ Association, and prominent manufacturers. An invitation to meet the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce and the Employers’ Association to-night was accepted by Mr Holmes. ’ Promotions and transfers in the Police Force at Christchurch were made known yesterday. Acting-Detectives E, G. Ward, T. H. A. Trezise, and B. H. Constable have become detectives; Constables J. Jones and W. Roycroft have been transferred to Greymouth, the latter to enter the district office there.
The appointment of Mr R. A. Keir, a member of the college staff, to the position of head of the engineering department of the Christchurch Technical College was approved at last night’s meeting of the Board of Governors Of the college. ,
- Mr R. P. Connell, newly-appointed fields superintendent at Christchurch for,the Department of Agriculture, arrived from the north yesterday.
Mr J. D. McKechnie, who has been manager of the Bank of New Zealand at Geraldine for the last 20 years, retired on Wednesday after 41 years’ service with the bank. Many customers were present at the farewell ceremony and Mr P. JE. iVllks presented Mr McKechnie with a wristlet watch as a token of esteem from the staff. -Mr McKechnie ; ioined the service of the bank at Gr’eymouth in 189fij ,lind served for a number of years in Christchurch arid Rakaia, as well as North Island offices.^
