APPEAL DISMISSED (P.A.) AUCKLAND, May 1. Saying that he couid not subsist on army rations because he ate nothing but wholemeal, milk, and water, James Richard Walker, a bricklayer, appealed against service on the ground of hardship before the No. 1 Armed Forces Appeal Board. ~ “I see you have been passed nt, -said the chairman (Mr C. H. Orr Walker). “Did you tell the doctors you could not eat army food?” “Not exactly,” said the reservist, “but I told them 1 was very weak in that respect.” He had already served three months in a Territorial camp, he “How did, you get on?” asked the chairman. . . ' . , Appellant: I bought my own. food. I could not eat the army rations. It is impossible for me to live on such food. , , "Well, medical men will deal with that when you are in camp,” said the chairman. “If your stomach proves too weak you will be put out of camp.” The appeal was dismissed. ANALYTICAL CHEMIST EXEMPTED (P.A.) WELLINGTON, May 1. “The women of this country are anxious to do something for the war effort,” said Mr W. F. Stilwell, chairman of the Armed Forces Appeal Board, considering the case of an analytical chemist. "I am quite sure that young women Who have graduated as Bachelors of Science will be- prepared to step into industrial work for the period of the Virfer fit least,** . A representative of the company
making the appeal said that attempts had not. been made to fill chemists positions with women graduates. ( To secure men was practically impossible. The appeal was adjourned sine die. In the national interest, it was pointed out. employers had to release a chemist if the Crown wanted his services. ■ : - . .
Amy Motor-Cyclists.—Motor-cyclists of the, armed forces will not require to carry L plates on their machines if they are Inexperienced riders, according to His Majesty’s forces motorcyclist suspension order gazetted last night. It is pointed out. however, that the riding-of motor-cycles by members of the forces is strictly supervised.— .(PA) _
