WAIKARI DOG TRIALS

■ HEADING EVENT COMPLETED I .; ' i The annual' sheep dpg trials of the Wal- ! kari Collie Club, which were commenced on Wednesday, were continued yesterday, when the first event was-completed. The gathering is the forty-ninth of th® clu . b * arid In Its lengthy existence the club has developed Into one, of the most important of its kind in the Dominion, Competitors 1 from a very wide area arC attracted to : it, and this is the case this year, , ali though the total ,1s a little less, due to young men having ' gone to the war, to scarcity of labour on the farm; and to an extent to the shortage of petrol, although this is being made available if applied for through ■ the prescribed channels. „ The day yesterday was beautifully fine, and there;was a ■;fait attendance of district people at-the trials.. The Judge was L. D. CamerOn, of Masterton, who has previously undertaken the. position, and he had a remarkable display of good work shown to him. Dog after dog scored points which in an ordinary trial wtmld have got them a place in the- prize list. Even a score of 55 points Was insufficient to get a dog Into the first six In the open event, and the number of dogs that got within 10 of the possible must constitute a record. Competing dogs were forward from North Otago, South Canterbury, and the West Coast. . ■ The heading and bringing back event, which was concluded yesterday, and . in which-there were 83 entries, was won by. C. H. Smith’s Moss, with a score of 58 points. The runner-up was A. C. Shand s Owd Bob, with 67 points. One point covered the next four dogs. The closeness of, the performances is emphasised by the fact that it took only 2j points to cover the first six dogs. : The sheep—-two-tooth halfbred wethers, lent by Mr W. A. Forrester, Walkari—were a good strong lot, and did not give competitors much, assistance. The trials, as ‘usual, were held on Mr K. D. Anderson's Braemyle farm, a good testing ground. The' second classr-the yarding event—was well advanced when proceedings ceased for the' day, and this class will be concluded this morning, there being a smaller number of entries —69. The work was not to clean as in the opening class, only a few dogs managing to yard their sheep.,' /■’ ‘.
