GAME REPORTED TO BE PLENTIFUL
“The most experienced sportsmen in this district tell me they have never Been so many ducks,” said Mr G. L. Pomfret-Dodd, secretary of the North Canterbury Acclimatisation Society, speaking last evening of the prospects for the shooting season which opens on May 3. ‘‘All reports indicate that there has been a marked increase in the numbers of ducks, and the general opinion is that this has been brought about by the shortening of the season in 1040 “ The shorter season, said Mr Pomfrett)odd, had enabled the ducks to begin breeding earlier, and there were a number of instances of double clutches. were flood stocks of all land garnet both pheasants and Californian quail. Canadian geese were said to have bred well and increased consider&biy t the society’s council meeting last evening appreciation was expressed of the provision of three week-ends in the open shooting season, which begins on May 3 and ends on May 18, except for Californian quail, which may be shot till May 31. The game committee’s report noted that the,use of power-boats on Lake Ellesmere for recovering native or imported game had been prohibited, - -
Industries Fair.— A report that arrangements were- proceeding satisfactorily for the New Zealand Industries Pair in August was made to the Cant*rbury Manufacturers’ Association last night. It was stated that the Government would be making a comprehensive display, that Lincoln College would be asked to have a: display, and that it was proposed to ask the Emergency Precautions Scheme committee to have a bomb-proof shelter erected for display I purposes.
