APPEAL FAILS
RESEARCH WORKER AND' WAR SERVICE MANPOWER COMMITTEE’S DECISION An appeal held in private at the request of the appellant, Herbert Walter Atack, who described himself as a research worker, was later dismissed by the Christchurch Manpower Committee yesterday. The following appeals were dismissed, subject to the appellant not being called on to enter camp before the date set out;— Llewellyn Munro Martin, clerk and student, June 1; Cyril Peter Denny, clerk, June 1 (both appeals being made by P. and D. Duncan, Ltd.); Andrew James Leslie Doak, farmer; of Killinchy, June 1; Lawrence Murray Baxter, farm-hand, of Waipara, June 1; Robert Stringer, farmer, of Amberley, May 1; Robert Henry Kane, tractor driver, of Ellesmere, July 1; Michael O’Sullivan Nelson, pastrycook, July 1; Bruce Ingham Dent, student, November 1; James Douglas Andrew, student, October 1; John David William Monigatti, student, November 1; Arthur Booth, farmer, of Leithfleld, June 1. The following appeals were adjourned sine die;—R. A. Turner, a coremaker; Herbert George Upston, electric welder (appeal by Director of National Service); Vernon Charles Duckmanton (described by his employers, J. Mercer and Sons, Ltd., as one of half a dozen stainless steel welders; left in the country); and Frederick Hyphus, - railways cadet (on the grounds of hardship). Appeals dismissed, besides that of Atack,, were those of John Crawford Kirkpatrick, an apprentice; John Netherton Nelson (who sought a postponement so that he could study for matriculation), ' and Herbert William Laws, a bricklayer (appealed for by. his mother). ;, Decision was reserved in the follow-, ing appeals:—Jack Ernest-Evans, farm; hand; Selwyn David Cameron, farmer, of Squthbridge; and Michael Kennedy, farm hdnd, of Amberley. The appeal ■ of,. Reginald McCabe, a syrup-maker, on the ground of status was allowed. S.-Barnett presided, him were MessrsS. L. Wright and G. T. Thurston.'
