Mr G. L. Laurenson, Commissioner of Transport, arrived from Wellington yesterday morning on his way south. He will pass through Christchurch on his return in the week-end.

Mr H. F. Butland, secretary of the Canterbury Employers’ Association, will return tomorrow from the south where he has been attending Conciliation Council meetings. Mr B. McFarlane, postmaster at Lower Hutt, who will retire on superannuation at the end of May after 40 years’ service, will live in Christchurch.

Dr. C. E. Beeby, Director of Education, is visiting Invercargill. A life membership medallion has been presented by the Caledonian Society of Invercargill to Mr John MacGregor, spast president, in appreciation of his services to the society during the last 55 years. Mr MacGregor intends making his home in Christchurch. Dr. W. S, Seed, Mr J. K. Moloney and Mr E. V. Phillips have been appointed the Canterbury Rugby Union’s representatives on the Lancaster Park Board of Control. Advice has been received in Auckland of the promotion of several officers in the Royal Navy who are well known in New Zealand, In each case the promotion has been effective since the beginning of the year. Commander D. M. L. Neame, who *was decorated with the Distinguished Service Order after the battle of the River Plate, when he was executive officer of the Achilles, has been promoted to the rank of captain. Lieutenant - Commander Dawnay, M.V.0., who also came to the New Zealand squadron in the Achilles, has been promoted to .commander. His wife, Lady Angela Dawnay, is a' sister of the Duchess of Gloucester. Another promotion is that of Paymaster-Lieuten-ant-Commander J. K. Highton to the rank of Paymaster-Commander. He served in New Zealand for several years as secretary to RearAdmiral the Hon. E. R. Drummond, then commanding the New Zealand Division of the Royal Navy.—Press Association. News of the promotion of their elder son, Squadron Leader R. G. R. Buckley, to the rank of wing commander, has been received by Captain G. Buckley and Mrs Buckley, of Auckland. Wing Commander Buckley is only 30 years of age. An old boy of Wanganui Technical College, he later attended Canterbury University College, where he obtained the degrees of Bachelor of Engineering and Bachelor of Science. After leaving the university he was granted a commission in the Royal Air Force, and left for ; England in 1935. He is at present engaged in important administrative work. A younger brother is Pilot Officer Jack Buckley, formerly well known as a pianist in Auckland, Just before the outbreak of war Pilot Officer Buckley was studying music in Berlin and Leipzig. Wing Commander M, W. Buckley, who has been In charge of the New Zealand bomber squadron in England, is a cousin. Captain Buckley is the Dominion’s senior bandmaster, and after 55 years in the military forces is still doing duty as bandmaster at Papakura military camp.—Press Association.
