The engagement is announced of Edna May, only child of Mr and Mrs Edmund C. Gee, Corson avenue, Christchurch, to Lieutenant-Engineer Norvel Keith Brown, Royal Naval Reserve, England, and formerly of Richmond, Nelson. New Zealand. WOMEN’S DIVISION OF FARMERS’ UNION ASHBURTON BRANCH The annual meeting of the Ashburton branch' of the Women's Division of the Farmers’ Union was held, with Mrs A. S. Hayman presiding over a good attendance. The president’s annual report and the balance-sheet were considered very satisfactory,"and mention was made that the cultural periods held during the year had been exceptionally good. Gifts had been sent to various activities, including the fighting forces, Lady Galway Guild, Red Cross Society, and refugee funds. Mrs Begg presented the housekeeping report. Regret was expressed at the death of Mrs Heseltine. In spite of years of 111-health, the report said, she had been a most helpful member. A vote of sympathy was passed with her relatives, ana also with Mrs Wilkin and the relatives of Mrs Hocking, in their recent bereavements. Mrs G. Moore, president of the executive, took the chair for the election of officers, which resulted as follows; President, Mrs A. S. Hayman; vicepresidents, Mesdames Bennett, Broom, Scott, and Amos; secretary, Mrs E. M. Begg: treasurer, Mrs Meaclem; committee, Mesdames Lattimore, Butterick, Crosson, Taylor, Bland, and Cass; delegates to the provincial executive, Mesdames Bennett and Broom; advisory members, Mesdames Hayman and Begg; competition secretaries, Mesdames Scott and Cass. GOVERNOR’S BAY-ALLANDALE BRANCH The annual meeting of the Governor’s Bay-Allandale branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union was held at the home of Mrs Roskilley, Governor’s Bay. Officers elected were;— President, Mrs Greig; vice-presidents, Mrs Foley, Mrs Allan, and Miss J. Allan; secretary and treasurer. Mrs L. Dines. A vote of thanks for her work was passed to Mrs F. Small, who is retiring from her office of secretary. WOMEN’S TEMPERANCE UNION CHRISTCHURCH BRANCH Mrs C. Henderson presided at the fortnightly meeting of the Christchurch branch of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union. A vote of sympathy was passed with Miss Wilkie-' in her recent bereavements. Members agreed to assist at the coming Y.M.CA. street appeal and to at-

tend the Riccarton Union’s birthday party. A gift of a child’s jumper was received and sent to the Maori Mission. Members were asked to send gifts of clothing and reading matter to men at the Aniseed Railway Camp. PAPANUI BRANCH Mrs Carr presided over the monthly meeting of the Papanui branch of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union. An interesting report was given by Mrs Elliott on the recent convention. A bring and buy sale was held to raise funds for the work of the local union.
