Rembrandt Lost—One of the rarest Rembrandt etchings was lost to the National Gallery of Victoria when the ship on which it was being brought to Australia was sunk by enemy action. The etching, Rembrandt’s largest, Was a .fourth state of the “Three Crosses,” the study of Christ crucified between the two thieves. It was bought In England In October for £6BO sterling, with Felton bequest funds, on recommendation of Sir Lionel XShfJsay, well-known Australian' artist. It measure Isi by 13i inches, -and in 1755 only 26 proofs of it were catalogued as having come on the market. It was one of Rembrandt’s finest, and the fourth state was regarded as one of the plate’s best. .
