FOOD CONTENT OF BEEF
NEW PROCESS OF EXTRACTION DISCOVERY BY BRITISH VETERINARY SURGEON LONDON, April 27. A method of extracting all the nutritive and stimulative properties of beef has been discovered by LieutenantColonel Herbert Watkins-Pitchford, which will enable concentrated food to be transported to England by air. It is claimed that a flying-boat with a capacity of three and a half tons could convey all the nutriment present in 121 carcases of an average dressed weight of 5601b. The food content of 51,600 carcases of beef could be transported in a ship having refrigerating space for 6000 carcases. The method is applicable to a wide range of foods without appreciably affecting the flavour. Lieutenant-Colonel Watkins-Pitch-ford has had a distinguished career as a veterinary surgeon in South Africa and Great Britain. He became principal veterinary surgeon in Natal in 1896, and served with distinction during the South African and 1914-18 wars: He was the originator of the modern method of treating the disease rinderpest, and devised a means for suppressing the dreaded African east coast fever, as well as preventing various forms of horse illnesses. Now in retirement. Lieutenant-Colonel WatkinsPitchford has devoted his time to various forms of research.
