HOME GUARD PARADE AT AUCKLAND

(P.A.) AUCKLAND, April 28. On a perfect autumn day a crowd of 10,000 persons on the slopes of the domain yesterday afternoon watched an inspiring spectacle provided by a parade of 6000 members of the Home Guard, who were inspected by the Governor-General (Marshal of the Royal Air Force Sir Cyril Newall). Thirteen of the 17 battalions in the No. 1 area participated. Men of all ages and all walks of life were represented, including veterans from other wars, youths in their teens, businessmen, farmers, shop assistants, bank clerks, factory workers, and professional men. Moving in seemingly endless line from the outer domain to the parade ground, the men marched smartly to the music of 12 bands, and when the battalions 'lined up abreast made a frontage of a quarter of a mile.
