Before the final event Conza led'by one point, bui Kilrobe, trained by Nurse, beai Conza's representative, Skyrena, for third place. TROTTING AT ADDINGTON FIRST DAY'S PROSPECTS The New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club.will open the Easter carnival of racing at Addington on Saturday with one of the best programmes ever presented at a trotting meeting in New Zealand. Classic racing up, to the present has not been a strong feature pf Metropolitan Club meetings, but the inclusion of the All Age Stakes and Free-for-All races for trotters and pacers has awakened a fresh Interest in the light harness sport. The season's racing has shown that trotting is as popular as ever it was, and the speed of both trotters and pacers is becoming better. The record of 3min lOsec for a mile and a half established last Saturday by Zincaii—a pacer not previously regarded in the highest class—came as something of a sensation, and on the fast Addington track this cannot be regarded as the limit of pacing speed. The horses engaged at Addington represent the best class available in New Zealand to-day. and while there may hot be racing a Harold Logan nor an Indianapolis, the calibre generally is well up to standard. The club has adopted the system of short limit races, and this has had the desired effect of restricting the fields to reasonable proportions while still retaining the ! Racing will commence at noon with the Preliminary Handicap, a race confined to intermediate class trotters. Included in the field are several trotters that have been gradually working up to the higher grades, and Allie Audubon and Milestone, on the limit, come in this category. Both have developed solidity with racing experience, and both will have to be considered. Allie Audubon's third behind Within and Certlssimus at Ashburton was full of promise. Judgment, on 24 yards, has been nominated for the Free-for-All, but nothing that he has done in public entitles him to entry into such select company. Elite Rey apparently races well when the mood takes her, but Margin is an improver On a heavy track Great Mountain may be a popular se ection. A big field of tWo-mile pacers will race in the Fendalton Handicap, but the horse? are well distributed over the/hort limit of 48 yards, and here is material for a most interesting race. Of the six horses on the limit, Channel Fleet, Golden Mist, and Sister Polly make the strongest appeal, and the last-named may in a measure retrieve the fortunes of the R. w. Townley stable. Silver Laddie, on 12 yards behind, is as genuine as they are made, and here is a prospective winner He seldom runs a bad race and has more consistent form than the majority. Busted Flush is a prospect over two miles, and Happy Man may be well supported. The last-named has a reputation for extreme speed and 48 yards may not be too much for him to give in a two miles race. • One of the most interesting races of the dav will be the Express Handicap, in which 'the rising champion. Bronze Eagle, will meet better and nore experienced pacets than he has yet run up against His last performance at Hutt Park marked the champion in the making for both in sprinting and staying powers he outclassed the moderate field opposed to him. Now he will meet Huguenot, consistent but unlucky. Three Tens, and Stormtost, all pacers well above the average. On his recent running. Bronze Eagle appears In the light of a genuine racehorse, and he should be the favourite. „„„,,,„,„ The 4min 28sec class Easter Handicap caters for horses mainly just outside the championship class, and If backers were certain that Dusky Sound had come back to his best November form there would be no question as to favouritism. Since his gruelling race in the New Zealand Cup, the South Canterbury pacer has not shown his accustomed dash, and from OT V yards behind he will have a big job in front of him. One that does appeal is Peter Smith, the black pacer in L. A. Maidens's stable. Always this horse has raced like a genuine stayer, and stamina must play a part in the decision of the Easter Handicap. Great Divide is as consistent as they are made, and Plutus. while not generally favoured over two miles, is the most genuine racehorse of th The C Auckland-owned Bold ■ Venture raced consistently at' Well ngton last week, and while she was not in the same class as Aspirant and Huguenot her form was good enough to suggest thaishewill have a rare chance in the Belfast Handicap. Loyal Rcy's poor effort at Ashburton will not deter supporters of a really good horse, and Willowbank, Molly Direct, and Uenuku will retain the support of many ardent admirers. The best trotters in the Dominion will parade in the Autumn Handicap, and following on two bright wins by .Gerfalcon at Ilutt Park last week, a handicap of CO yards will not put hhn out of couit. Dark Hazard failed at Wellington under conditions that plainly did not suit him, but from 48 yards behind his prospects appear reasonable. A great stayer, his chances must always be respected. Captain Bolt has done little racing, but Pilot Peter Is- reported to have come back to his best, and Bush Laddie, racing on a good clay track, may improve consider-' ably on his New- Brighton form. He claims an engagement in the trotters, The°All Age Stakes is a problem for speculators, and though three-year-olds usually hold an advantage in this class of race, it seems that the older horses inav have a chance this time. The three-vea'r-old trotter, Certisslmus, appears to be out of his class, and two unsteady beginnings by Special Force do not encourage support. Brlhlant as he has shown himself, Special Force cannot afford to concede any starts to the older horses he is opposed to. Gold Bar, if at his best will be the most difficult horse to dispose of, but there is a wholesome re-, spect for All Gallant, whose recent racing has stamped him as one likely to reach the best classes. .He has made great improvement in the last five months. Nelson Eddy, Plutus, and Pot Luck, giving away 30 yards, are all possibilities, and with luck in the running may take a hand in the finish. In the Wilkin Handicap. Great Blaze will be making his first appearance in the colours of L. A. Maidens, but he has never impressed as, a very solid pacer* Royal Surprise is the genuine stayer of the race, and Pleasant Guy and Special Edition make an appeal. In briefly summing up the prospects, the following horses may be expected to race Preliminary Handicap: Margin. Milestone. Allie Audubon. Fendalton Handicap: Silver Laddie, Happy Mr.n, Sister Polly. Express Handicap: Bronze Eagle, Huguenot, Three Tens. „".„.„■ * Easter Handicap: Peter Smith, Great Divide Plutus. Belfast Handicap: Willowbank, Bold Venture, Loyal Rey. . • Autumn Handicap: Dark Hazard, Bush Laddie, Gerfalcon. _ ~ „ All Age Stakes: Nelson Eddy, Gold Bar, All Gallant. , Wilkin Handicap: Royal Surprise, Special Edition, Pleasant Guy.
