RED CROSS SOCIETY

YALDHURST SUB-CENTRE The first'annual meeting of the Yaldhurst, sub-centre of the Red Cross Society Was held recently. The balance-sheet showed a credit balance of £7 10s lid, and the membership was 46. The annual report said that during the year knitting had been done by members, parcels of clothing collected for the Lady Galway Guild, and cakes, etc., provided for a week for soldier patients in hospitals. The sum. of £2B 3s 2d had been paid into the Sick, Wounded, and Distress Fund, and £39 9s lOd, as well as goods and produce, had been sent to help a patriotic effort.

Mrs T. A. Guy was re-elected president, and other officers appointed were as follows:—Vice-presidents, Mrs J. Curtis and Mrs H. Inch; secretary and treasurer, Mrs I. A. Doyle; committee, Mesdames T. J. Franks, A. Johnston, T. Chappell, J. A. Crawford C. Blank, J. Sowden, an£ Miss /N. Crawford. Mrs J. G. L. Vernon gave a short address on Red Cross work and its present requirements of the society. AIRMAN HONOURED The Duvauchelle hall was filled to overflowing when a social was given in honour of Sergeant Pilot J. F. Lewthwaite, the first pilot to leave the district for .eryice Overseas. Members of the Duvauchelle Home Guard and returned soldiers were present. Mr E. A. Pettigrew, on behalf of the residents of the district, wished the guest of honour Godspeed and presented him with a gold wristlet watch and a parcel from the Duvauchelle subcentre of the Red Cross Society.
