STOCK EXCHANGE BUSINESS

QUIET MARKETS

Markets were quiet on call yesterday, and although there 'was good inquiry for a wide range of stocks, business was restricted to a few lines. Apart from vestibule business, the following transactions were recorded:— Sales on ’Change—Listed Stocks; 75 National Bank of New Zealand, 365. Sales Reported Listed Stocks: 10 Bank of N.S.W., £29; 70 Union Bank o/ Australia (late sale Friday), £7; 150 Broken Hill Proprietary (2), 43s 6d; 100 Broken Hill Proprietary (5s paid, new), 25s 9d; 300 New Zealand Insurance, 61s 6d, Buyers of ( New Zealand Government 4 per cent, stock, due 1955, raised their bids to £ 105 10s, but sellers were reticent.

National Bank of New Zealand were steady, with sellers and business at 365. Bank of New South Wales remained unaltered at £29, and closed with unsupported sellers at that price, A late sale of Union Bank of Australia on April 4 was reported at £7, and sellers yesterday offered at that figure, without attracting buyers. New Zealand Insurance were firm at 61s 6d. United Building were firmer on buyers’ offers, 20s 6d. Buyers ofKaiapoi Woollens raised their bids to 15s, no sellers offering. Christchurch Gas were firmer, with buyers at 21s. Broken Hill Proprietary advanced to 43s 6d, market closing 3d either way. The new 5s paid shares eased to 25s 9d, and more were wanted at 25s 6d. STOCK SALES SUPPLEMENTARY ' EWE FAIR There was a small attendance but good buying strength at the supplementary ewe fair at Culverden yesterday. The sheep were in good condition as a result o£ the abundant feed after recent rains. Prices for good sheep were fully on a par with late rates, but medium and Inferior sheep were up by fully 2s a head. Moonlight Goldfields.—The wash-up on April 4 was 360z 19dwt for 200 hours' sluicing. Ngahcre.—The dredge, which has been undergoing repairs, began operations again at 3 p.m. on Friday. Blackwater Mines. Ltd.—The return for March is: Crushed 2475 tons, yielding 1269 fine ounces of gold from all sources, including the clean-up of the old mill, the value of which, taking gold at £8 8s a fine ounce, was £10,660. Working expenses, not including ordinary or war duty, were £7094; development expenditure was £491, and capital .expenditure was £205.

There was an entry of more than 200 head of cattle at the monthly stock sale at Duvauchelle on Friday and a large attendance. The sale throughout was ft keen one, with very much improved prices paid for beef compared with the sale of a month ago. A line of 10 fat steers, sold on behalf of V. J. Armstrong, Stoney Bay, made from £l3 17s 6d to £l6 12s 6d. Fat stock appeared in prime condition.
