WHEATGROWING PROGRAMME
“The national objective for the 194142 season is 300,000 acres of wheat. Of this total, the territory under the jurisdiction of your council has been given a minimum allocation of 103,000,” stated a circular from the Director of Primary Production (Mr R. B. Tennent), which was received by the North Canterbury District Council of Primary Production at a meeting yesterday afternoon. The circular continued: “I would urge your council to organise a systematic effort immediately to have the allocated area grown. I suggest that the acreage required be divided among your local production committees according to the potentialities of their particular districts. You will appreciate that in view of the advancing season no time should be lost in commencing the drive. "No increase is being sought in the acreage of oats nor of barley, apart from malting barley, the required sowing of which will be arranged by contract, as has been customary.” “I move that we express regret that Mr Tennent did not attend this meeting, since he is in Christchurch,” said Mr H. S. Lawrence. “It is time that we took the gloves off to Mr Tennent.” , The motion was carried.
