CRICKET

COMPETITION WON BY OLD BOYS

LANCASTER PARK EQUAL IN POINTS

Although Old Boys and Lancaster Park were equal with 78 points at the conclusion of the Canterbury Cricket Association’s season on Saturday, the title of winner of the competition goes to Old Boys by virtue of a rule of the association that when two teams are equal on points the competition is won by the side with the smallest number of losses. Old Boys had only two losses, compared with Lancaster Park's seven. Conditions for play were excellent, but the matches in which the joint leaders were engaged were rather disappointing, and each' had an easy win.

The results of Saturday’s games are as follows:

Old Boys 142 tor four wickets beat Riccarton 138 on the first innings.

Lancaster Park 134 lor three wickets beat St. Albans 125 on the first innings. • West Christchurch 201 for four wickets beat Wigram 195 for seven wickets (declared) oh the first innings.

Bast Christchurch 220 for six wickets (declared) drew with Sydenham 181 for six wickets.

Army 255 for six wickets beat West Christchurch Old Boys 250 on the first innings. Old Collegians 249 for two wickets (declared) beat Harewood 116 on the first innings.

At no stage did Riccarton look like making a stand against a consistently steady Old Boys’ attack. A. W. Roberts, with 45, was the only one to make a stand. The opening Old Boys’ bowlers took no wickets, and it was W. McD. Anderson, with his slows, who did the damage, taking six wickets for 56. W. A. Hadlee batted soundly for his 31, but both Anderson and V. G. Hill, who made 33 each, gave easy chances early. Apart from Roberts, who took two wickets for 19 off 9 overs, the Riccarton bowling was only fair.

Lancaster Park, without 1. B. Cromb, had an even easier win over St. Albans, for whom J. Smith’s 50 was the only bright spot. W. E. Mapplebeck bowled well to take six wickets for 23, but D. N. Mcßae was more impressive and his two for 49 off 21.6 overs, was outstanding. Lancaster Park found little trouble in the St. Albans bowling, and the play was bright all through the innings in which W. O. Mapplebeck (43) and V. C. Empson (36 not out) batted enterprisingly. There was some.brilliant batting in the other games. The highlight of the day was the stand of C. V. Walter and C. G. Hamilton, who put on 201 for the first wicket for Old Cojlegians, who easily beat Harewood, In 80 minutes. Walter made 108 and Hamilton 110 not out. N. Alexander made 102 not out for Army against West Old Boys in 80 minutes. In this game 505 runs were scored in four hours and a half. Other good scores were those R. McKenzie (West Old Boys) 84, S. G. Lester (Wigram) 87, J. Kemp (Wigram) 63 T. Kennedy (East Christchurch) 61, J. Kerr (West Christchurch) 67 not out. F. R. Allen (Army) 59 not out, and A. Burgess (Sydenham) 51. Few good bowling averages were obtained, the best being: H am " ilton (Old Collegians) three for 18, J. Nee (West Christchurch) four for 40, and P. H. T. Alpers (Old Collegians) six for 61.
