WEEKEND BIVOUAC

♦ NATIONAL MILITARY RESERVE Actual service conditions were cheerfully endured by about 650 members of the National Military Reserve, Canterbury Battalion, over the week-end, when they made a bivouac at the New Brighton racecourse and carried: out extensive exercises. The area,of operations was the Waimairi golf course, and the sandhills towards the sea from there. Starting at 2,15 on Saturday, a de 1 fensive line, complete with trench system, machine-gun and listening post, was occupied by 8 p.m., and from then until-6 a.m. on Sunday it was held against frequent frontal “attacks.” Soon after 6 a.m., attack .and-counter-attack were made by the various companies of the battalion. The operations were the most comprehensive undertaken yet, and the umpires said that they were an unqualified success. After further operations on Sunday, the men changed and washed, and though many of them were. veterans of the last war, they: showed no ■ signs of fatigue in the march past, which was headed -by Colonel H.. C. Hurst.
