GERMANS GO TO ITALY
LONDON, February 24. The correspondent of “The Times” on the Italian frontier states that German troop transports continue to go to Sicily and southern Italy - unceasingly. Many German sailors not belonging to, any ship have gone to the south of Italy, presumably to take over at least a part of the Italian navy. AXIS CONFERENCE WITH FRANCO • BERNE, February 24. The Berlin correspondent of the newspapert‘Der Bund” state* that the . Axis conference’ with General Franco was designed to arrange for the supply of raw materials and food to Spain apross , the French Riviera by railway. The Axis asked in return for air bases in the Balearic Islands arid Spanish Morocco. General Franco did not commit himself. General Franco was 'the Axis advocate with Marshal Pelain for the use of the Riviera railway. FREE FRENCH FORCES LONDON, February 24, Sub-Lieutenant Saphir, in a speech on behalf of the Free French, said that the Free French forces at (he end of' last year were 35,000 men, 1000 airmen, 20 ‘ warships, and 60 merchantmen. These figures did not include the forces in Libya and Eritrea and other African garrieons. The strength of the Free French forces wa» increasing everyday.
