ITALY’S USE OF RED CROSS
AEROPLANE FORCED
TO LAND
RUGBY, February 5. A broadcast over the Italian radio against an alleged “boast” in a 8.8.C. programme that an Italian Red Cross aircraft flying to Tobruk was shot down by a British fighter, has been the subject of ihquiry. It was discovered that no such boast or claim was ever made by the 8.8.C. What actually happened was that the Red Cross machine was not shot down, but was forced to land by a British fighter. When this Italian aircraft was examined it was ‘found to contain correspondence, and ammunition and spare parts for the Breda 20-millimetre gun. ' I It will be remembered that Britain; has already had cause to complain of ’ the illegal use made of the Red Cross by Germany, and a warning was given some time ago to both Germany and Italy that Red Cross aircraft or boats cannot be given immunity if they enter areas in which active operations are in ■ progress.
