DAMAGE TO H.M.S. ILLUSTRIOUS
STATEMENT BY U.S. MINISTER (Received January 6, 9 p.m.) WASHINGTON, February 5. The United States Secretary of the Navy (Colonel Frank Knox) told a press conference that the British aircraft-carrier Illustrious was recently able to reach Malta and then Alexandria under her own power after a direct hit by a 10001b bomb. The bomb killed 80 men and destroyed 30 aeroplanes, but it did .not affect the ship’s navigability or power.
