RANGIORA NOTES V.A.D. DETACHMENT FORMED A detachment of the Voluntary Aid Division has been formed in Rangiora and will hold regular training classes this year. The detachment was formed after a visit this week by Misses Havelaar and Davies, organisers from Christchurch. More than 20 members of the Rangiora sub-centre of the Red Cross Society, who have passed home-nursing and first-aid examinations and are therefore eligible as V.A.D.’s, have joined the detachment. Mrs L. M. King has been appointed superintendent, and Miss J. Glasgow commandant. Misses M. Ager and J. Taylor are section leaders, and Miss N. Stevenson is secretary. The detachment will be divided into two sections. Members jvill shortly start a course on hygiene and sanitation. A number of Rangiora V.A.D. s have already completed 60 hours’ hospital training, assisting at various times at the Rangiora Maternity Hospital. Classes in home-nursing will be conducted again this year by the subcentre of the Red Cross Society. Appeal for Patriotic Funds The local funds sub-committee of the Rangiora Patriotic Committee has received permission from the Rangiora Borough Council to hold a street appeal in the town to-day, Women members of the committee and helpers will canvass the town during the day, and the collection this evening will be in the hands of men of the committee,. The proceeds from the appeal will be devoted to local patriotic funds, Mclntosh Shield Rangiora is leading Kaiapoi in the 1940-41 inter-borough contest for the Mclntosh Shield, five fixtures of which have been decided so far, Rangiora has won tire golf, miniature rille shooting, and cricket competitions. Kaiapoi was successful in the Rugby football match, and the women’s hockey game was drawn. The shield was won last season by Rangiora, which won seven of the 12 matches. Harvesting Operations In a few Rangiora districts harvesting work was delayed in the early part of the week by rain, but the warm sunny weather yesterday enabled the farmers to continue with their work. Although it is still too early to judge the general quality and size of the yields, some first-class samples have come forward. Mothers’ Union The Rangiora branch of the Anglican Mothers’ Union held its first meeting of the year on Wednesday. There was a good attendance. Canon G. Nelham Watson conducted an admission service in the church. Arrangements were made for members to attend a festival in the Christchurch Cathedral on February 19. Red Cross Society The sum of £l7 5s was paid into the Rangiora Patriotic Committee’s funds from the proceeds of patriotic • purposes shops opened by the Rangiora sub-centre of the Red Cross Society in December. This was reported at a meeting of the sub-centre this week. Mrs L. M. King presided. A letter thanking the sub-centre for its gift of garments for dispatch to the London distress areas was received from the Christchurch centre. Arrangements were made for the sub-centre to entertain at the Welcome Club, Christchurch, early next month.
