PRICE OF FRUIT
TO THE BDITOB 07 THE PRESS. Sir,—l think it high time that retailers of fruit should be brought to book for profiteering. On asking if I could get 3d worth of plums (as I did not wish to change £1) I was told yes. Four were put on the scale, then one was taken off and I was handed the large amount of three plums.' At Id each one would only get eight for Bd. I told the retailer that with the glut of fruit he had he could have left the four, as he would throw away a great many. It seems to be the rule for retailers to get all the profits, while the grower and consumers get hardly anything—the one very little money, the other very little fruit. If housewives would boycott these retailers for a week, things would speedily mend.—Yours, etc., CHEAPER FRUIT, February 6, 1941.
