BELLE CANE WINS OAKS

Royal Chief’s Second Canterbury Cup THIRD DAY OF RICCARTON MEETING Oaks Day at Riccarton yesterday was favoured with fine weather: but a north-westerly wind, reaching almost hurricane force at times, made conditions unpleasant. Yet the racing was interesting throughout and was thoroughly enjoyed by the largest assemblage of racegoers recorded on Oaks Day for some years. The track had been subjected to extensive artificial watering, and the going was much improved, but naturally the surface soon dried up under the influence of the weather. Some fast times were registered, especially over the shorter courses, in which the horses were assisted by a following wind. Main interest was centred in the contest for the New Zealand Oaks, and after an excellent race Belle Cane made amends for her failure in the New Zealand Derby by a convincing win from Cherry Bay, who had figured as a two-year-old winner on the course in March last. The Riccarton representative, Doria, was a fair third.

Globe Trotter disappointed an army of supporters in the Jockey Club Handicap, failing to show any of his good form of the previous two days. The race was won by the second choice, Nigger Boy, who outclassed his five opponents over the last two furlongs. Royal Chief and The Buzzer had an exercise canter for the first mile of the Canterbury Cup, and in the sprint home, Royal Chief always held his rival safe, and won decisively. The winner's share of the £7OO stake was £560. bringing his total winnings to £15,822 10s for 22 firsts, 15 seconds, 6 thirds, and 15 unplaced performances. The day’s programme was dispatched without any delay, and, as throughout the meeting to date, the last race was run practically on time. The club’s chairman, Mr A. S. Elworthy has had a busy time each day, and with the assistance of his strong committee, the arrangements have been carried out with evident satisfaction to all.

NOTES ON THE RACING The Hurdle Rare Jewish Lad was sent out a good favourite for the Port Cooper Hurdles, and was in front throughout. He was followed early by Donadea, who, when in second place at the five-furlong post, crashed. Recollection and Sir Frederick moved up to Jewish Lad approaching the straight, with Dorado closely following, but none had a chance of getting up to him in the run home. Dorado headed oil Recollection after the last fence, and beat him comfortably for second money. Sir Frederick was six lengths buck, with Master Dingle and Milford tailed oif. Jewish Lad again gave a faultless and last display, and had his opponents in troubl* throughout. He has undoubtedly developed marl ed stamina, and had something in reserve. Dorado improved on previous eirorts, but Recollection, even with a change of rider, was never going like a winner, Sir Frederick looked dangerous at the last fence, but stopped badly. Milford jumped badly at practically every fence, and Master Dingle also shaped poorly. A Speedy Juvenile Vanina hopped out first in (he Spring Nursery Handicap, and was never in danger of being overhauled. He was followed on to the course proper by Divorced, Renarde, Full Pitch, and Silver Lily, Varun carried on for a decisive win from Renarde. who got up on the line to beat Divorced. Silver Lily was two lengths away, in front of Miss Jessica, Par Avion, and Full Pitch. As Required swung round when 1 lie barrier went up and.took no part in the race. Varuna must have commenced exceptionally smartly, as sire started from wide out, lint was on the fence well clear at the false rail. Renarde attracted attention by her forward showing and solid finish. The same applied to Divorce, a well-grown colt by Miclian, who can n s the same colours as Gold Salute before he was sold. Silver Lily did not show her previous speed, and Par Avion was always behind her. Full Pitch showed up tor about half the journey. Never in Doubt

It was unfortunate for the club that there was no rain before the meeting, as no doubt the hard track had much to do with the thinning out of some of yesterday’s fields. With only two horses in the Canterbury Cup. and six starters in the Jockey Club Handicap, a big drop in the totalisator turnover was expected, especially us the pool on the Cup was more than £3OOO short of that of last year, but the final figures showed a slight increase, a result that must have been very pleasing to the committee. The sum of £42,822 10s (win £21,121, place £21,701 10s) was handled, as against £42,792 10s on Oaks Day last year, an increase of £3O. Belle Cane was supported down to cramped odds in the New Zealand Oaks, and incidentally paid a little more for a place than a win. Doria soon went to the front and through the back stretch was accompanied by Rue, two lengths in front, of Belle Cane and Phyto together, and a similar distance to Nightglass and Cherry Bay. They ran thus in pairs to the half mile, where Belle Cane improved her position. Rue retired before reaching the straight, Belle Cane ran up to Dona with Cherry Bay also coming fast. Belle Cane soon drew to the front in the run home, and had the race in safe keeping a furlong from the post. Cherry Bay and Doria engaged in a hard tussle for second money, the former gaining a half-length verdict. Phyto was four lengths hack with Nightglass next and Rue tailed off.

There was no doubt about Bette cane a superiority on the day. The first mile was covered in Imin 42 2-ssec, and the last half mile in 47 2-ssee. Cherry Bay put up a creditable fight, and will win races for her owner, Mr F. Armstrong, of Hawke's Bay. Doria pulled hard in front, and aitbough she hung on well, she was no match for the winner. The others were actually outclassed over the last two furlongs. Won Easing Up Globe Trotter was sent out a better favourite than Nigger Boy for the sixhorse Jockey Club Handicap, but was never within reach of Nigger Boy, Norseman, and Second Innings, who disputed the lead throughout. Nigger Boy was the early leader, but Norseman displaced him round the far turn and to the straight entrance. The run home had not long been tackled when Nigger Boy drew right away and won easing up. Second Innings put in a telling final run. which landed him an easy second, clear of Norseman. Windsor Chief was three lengths _ back, well in gront of Globe Trotter, with Sly Fox bringing up the rear. The race was a disappointing one. as apart from the fact that there were only six acceptors out of 57 horses handicapped, the issue was actually confined to one horse. Nigger Boy has won four races for his present owners, who paid 600 guineas for him at the last Grand National meeting. Second Innings ran a sound race

throughout, and Norseman also showed improvement, but both Globe Trotter and Sly Fox failed badly. Canterbury Cup Laniboura was withdrawn from ihe Canterbury Cup, and Riccarton racegoers had the unsual experience of watching a two-horse race. The pair moved out from the barrier abreast, and to the accompaniment of derisive cries from the crowd along the fence, they cantered out of the straight and into the back stretch with Royal Chief about two lenghs in front. The first half-mile took lmUi7sec. and they carried on in this manner to the mile m 2min ssec. Then the pace was increased, and turning for home Royal Chief was still two lengths in front of his rival, who appeared lu be closing up on him. but When Royal Chief was asked a Question he had no trouble in keeping Tac Buzzer at bay. The latter got up to within half a length on the line, but there was more than that in the winner’s favour. Royal Chief won the same race 12 months ago, and this was the seventh winner of the race trained by F. D. Jones, who in addition rode Menschikoff in 1901. Outsider’s Success Blandisher was confidently supported to win the Ashley Hack Handicap, but had his colours lowered by one of the outsiders, Craiglea. who had a decisive win. Withdrawal and Blue Coat were the early leaders, but on to the course proper synthetic was in front of Withdrawal. Star Wink, Blandisher. Craiglea, and Blue Coat. Blandisher soon tackled Synthetic, an “ then Craiglea drew out. The test-named soon streaked to the front, and had the field scrambling for the remainder of the journey. Blandisher did not have much to spare from Synthetic, while Blue Coat finished fast into fourth place a neck away. Then followed Lord Midas, Withdrawal. Star- Wink, and Leighnor. Craiglea. having her first race at the meeting, gave L. J. Ellis an easy ride, and paid the second biggest dividend of yie meeting to date. Blandisher had every chance, and Synthetic ran his best race this season. Sir Auiyas Wins The Otaio Plate attracted a strong field, and an interesting race was staged. When the field settled down, ■ Boloyna showed out from Great Night, Schoolgirl, Augment. Sir Amyas, and Airline, the last at this stage.being Ferriby. Iceland Spar, and Auto Sweep. Gayest Son inade a last run from the middle of the held to be close up to the leaders rounding the home turn, and followed Boloyna and Great Night into the straight, with Augment and Schoolgirl handy. The leaders only lasted to the distance, where Gayest Son appeared likely to draw to the front, but Sir Amvas then appeared, and with a furlong to* go had taken charge. Schoolgirl staved oft Gayest Son and Augment, but could not make* any impression on Sir Amyas who won without any pressure. Gayest’ Sou weakened nearing home, and Augment tilled a close third placing, with Gay Fox two lengths away. Then followed Gayest Sou, Multler, Boloyna, and Airline. , . .. . , . Sir Amvas ran impressively, and finished with a lot in hand. Schoolgirl also completed her task solidly. Gayest Son lulled under his big weight after making a last run up to the leaders with over hall a mile to go. Iceland Spar and Feniby both met trouble in the early stages, and were sent back, the former being m last place for a good way. Airline was well enough placed during the middle part, but did not improve his position. A Comfortable Victory

Rakahanga, a stablemate of Varuna, and fourth choice for the Avon Handicap, repeated her winning performance in the race of two years ago. She started from well out. but when the course proper was reached, site ran to the front from the early leader, Raceaway, and a furlong from home had Boswell, Gold Flight, and Skyreua as her nearest attendants. Boswell made a game elTort to get up. but Rakahanga was never in danger. Gold Flight slaved on for third money a length in front of Skyrena. Shikari was close up. wilh the favourite Ship a lung way back. This was Uakahanga's first win since last Easter, while she was unplaced in her lour previous starts this season. Siie hud an apprentice allowance of 31b, and finished full of running. Boswell carried strong support, but on ground not to ids liking had no chance with llle winner. Gold Flight got a lucky run through on the fence at the false rail and appeared to check Raceaway, who. however, was beginning to weaken at the time. Skyrena ran a creditable race, and should be useful when the opposition is not so strong. Rebel Male was prominent early only, while Strip gave a very poor display.
