OVERSEAS BALLOT NEXT WEEK

Men for the Sixth Reinforcements EARLY TRAINING UNLIKELY (press association tei.f.gh am.) Wellington, November 13. The third ballot under the National Service Emergency Regulations, which will be for the selection of men for overseas service, is to begin on Monday, November 18. Making this announcement to-night, the Minister for National Service (the Hon. R. Semple) said the men to be drawn were required for the 6th Reinforcements. Though the dale could not yet be definitely stated, it was unlikely that they would be required to start training for some months. “The object of holding the ballot so far in advance is to give the men concerned and their employers the longest possible notice so the necessary business arrangements may be made,” said Mr Semple. "While every effort will be made to have the men medically examined as soon as possible, in view of the fact that medical boards will be fully occupied for some time yet in examining the men drawn in the second territorial ballot, it is *iot anticipated that they will be in a position to start on the overseas men until early in the new year.

“The number of men to be selected is 14,000, and a Gazette containing their names will be published on December 4. Appeals against being called up must therefore be lodged by December 14. A point to be noted in connexion with appeals is that they must be addressed or delivered to the Director of National Service, Wellington. for transmission to tlw Armed Forces Appeal Board, and not, as in the case of territorial ballots, to the secretaries of manpower committees. “Men who are eligible for inclusion in the first division of the reserve dp not cease to be members of that division on voluntarily ioining home defence units, or on being drawn in a territorial ballot. Cards for such men will be restored to the register for the purposes of the overseas ballot, provided, of course, that they come within the age limits of class A of the first division, which is the only class over which the ballot will be held. The age limits are 21 to 40 years, both inclusive. “Any men who were called in the second (territorial) ballot but have not vet gone into camp, and are again drawn in the overseas ballot will not be required to undergo territorial training: but will be held back to commence their training with the sixth reinforcements for overseas service.”
