METHVEN TOURNEY

SIXTY-EIGHT TEAMS TAKE PART

The annual hockey tournament —women's six-a-slde and men's flve-a-side —organised by the Methven Women’s Hockey Club and run under the auspices of the Ashburton Women's Hockey Association, was held at the Methven Domain on Saturday In fine weather. The grounds were in good order. The entry was a record, with 68 teams, and of these only throe failed to put in an appearance. With four grounds in use the games were run o)T In good time, ail the officials of the club, with the assistance of Ashburton, Christchurch, and Wellington referees, carrying out their duties most efficiently. Most of the gomes were very evenly contested, In several extra time had to be played before a decision was reached. One pleasing feature was that although this year no trophies were awarded for Individual winners the entry was larger than ever. The winners of the various grades are, —Women’s senior A, Hornby A; women s senior B, Hororata; women’s Junior, Ashburton Technical: women’s midget grade, Methven Convent, Men’s senior A, Selwyn; men s senior B, Sydenham: men's Junior, Wigram Air Force. The challenge shields, which the winners hold tor one year, were presented at a dance in the Town Hall In the evening bv the president of the Ashburton Hockey Association (Mrs G. Johns).
