RACING AND TROTTING

PETERSHAM wins

SUCCESSES OF HEARTH AND iILAZEALONG

GERALDINE RACING CLUB’S MEETING

The Geraldine Racing Club’s annua] race meeting was concluded on the Orari racecourse on Saturday in favourable conditions, and the attendance was much larger than on the first day. The track had dried up since Thursday, and times were taster, while the racing was again interesting throughout Speculation was brisk, the sum of £ 16.019 Ids being handled, as against £11.397 10s on the second day last year. The total for the meeting was £27,897, as compared with £19.271 last year, an increase of £8826. The principal event, the President’s Handicap, was won by Petersham, after an interesting tussle over the last furlong. and the open sprint, the Stewards’ Stakes, gave Hearth her second win at the meeting. She had a close call on this occasion, as she got up only in the last stride to overhaul the pacemaker. Raceaway The Riccarton-trained All Night also recorded a dual success at the mcet- < ing by winning the Gladstone Hack* Handicap decisively, and Wild Coon entered his name on the winning list for the first time by taking the Wainui Hack Handicap. The concluding event, the Champion Hack Handicap, attracted a strong field, and it was won by the second outsider, Blazealong. who paid a sensational dividend. NOTES ON THE RACING

Leopardstown Wins With Recollection taken out of the Second Hurdles, Sir Frederick was sent out a good favourite, but was beaten into third place, mainly as a result of some faulty jumping over the first half of the journey, Jewish Lad once again carried the field along at a sound pace and had a substantial lead with half a mile to go, but both Master Dingle and Sir Frederick then ran past him, and Master Dingle was first over the last fence from Sir Frederick and Leopardstown. Master Dingle appeared to have the race well in hand until Leopardstown put in a 'determined claim. The latter, confidently ridden, gradually pot Master Dingle's measure in the run home end won well by a neck. Sir Frederick stayed on for third money, beating Jewish Lad by half a length. leopardstown. evidently improved by his Ashburton race, tire first hurdle race of his career, gave a clean display throughout and finished as if he had something In reserve. Master Dingle Jumped better Ilian on the first day, but Sir Frederick hit the first few fences and lost ground. Jewish Lad gave another dashing display virile he lasted. Arita narrowly , missed falling at the second fence and was never prominent afterwards. Unsatisfactory Start The start of the Wainui Handicap was not very satisfactory, and four horses. Urge. Foxette, Leighnor, and Maritimus, were badly left. Pink Gauntlet and Circular Note led to the straight entrance from Green Gables, Wild Coon, and Safe Light. Green Gables challenged early in the run home, but could not improve bis position, and then Wild Coon shot through on the rails to soon overhaul the leaders and to beat them going away. Circular Note as easily hold off Safe Light, who put in some tolling work over the final stages and boat Tissue by a neck. Pink Gauntlet and Green Gables headed the remainder

Wild Coon has been a long’ time winning a race in sipte of his good track work. His owners reside in Invercargill but Wild Coon has been trained at Riccarton since June. Circular Note made a bold showing, while Safe Light's belated effort suggested lie will do well at some of the smaller meetings in the south. Green Gables did not get a break as on the first day. but was nevertheless well placed from the outset , Petersham’s Handicap

The President's Handicap provided an interesting race. Combat was the early leader but gave way to Night Hawk in the back stretch, and the latter led round the top from Petersham, Combat, Roy Bun. Night Dress, and Swordstiek, with The Raker and Passaform in the roar. Night Hawk still hold charge turning into the straight from Petersham, Roy Bun. Combat. Swordstiek. , and Glenofa Boy. Petersham soon ran down the lender and carried on for an easy win. In an exciting struggle for second money between Swordstiek and the fasl-finishing Passaform, the former gained a narrow verdict. Night Hawk was a length away, just in front of Glcnora Boy, Night Dress, and Combat together. Petersham had the race won a furlong from home, and his success, following minor placings, was well deserved. Swordstick showed improved forn; and ;Passaform’s finishing effort was a feature of the race. Night Hawk turned on some speed during the middle stages, but did not last long in the straight. Glenora Boy essayed a promising run through on the rails entering upon the last furlong, but could not sustain it. Night Dress was well placed until he began to drift after reaching the straight. Roy Bun looked likely a furlong from home but failed to stay on, and the remark applied to Combat. Domain Trot Auric’s Star was sent out win favourite in the Domain Trot, and after being prominent most of the way broke when under pressure inside the last furlong. The race was won by Marco P<?Io, who. after failing to move off at Ashburton and again on the first day of this meeting, was well placed from the _ outset, and followed Channel Fleet and Clonard into the straight, with Hamarfast. Auric’s Star, and Chelidon in close attendance. Marco Polo gradually improved his position in the run home and he and Chelidon had a hard tussle over the final stages, the former winning well by less than a length. Hamarfast was a good third, a length in front of Clonard. with Aurie’s Star. Channel Fleet, and Waikari Chief following in that order. Good-class Hack All Night was supported down to a short price in the Gladstone Hack Handicap and carried out his part by another convincing win. Lady Magellan was the early leader, but at the end of two furlongs The Vulture showed out from Royal Lancer, All Night, and Craiglea. The Vulture was first into the straight from All Night, Craiglea, Royal Lancer, and Airline. All Night soon drew to the front in the run home, and went on to outclass the field. Airline finished solidly to beat Royal Lancer in the last stride for second honours. The Vulture was two lengths back in fro-* of Sweet Mystery and Taxpayer, All Ni"ht gave another impressive display and has bright prospects. His next racing will probably be at Wingatui next month. Airline showed further improvement and is due for an early win. Royal Lancer ran another good race, but The Vulture once more failed to stay on. Taxpayer was always badly placed. Second Success Hearth, with a 51b allowance, was sent out a short-priced favourite for the Stewards’ Stakes. She duly won, but only just scraped home. Raceaway had a three lengths’ lead entering the straight from Hearth, Nightcalm. Skyrena, and Kilrobe. and it was not until the last few strides that Hearth made any impression on the leader. Raceaway then weakened, and Hearth swooped down on him to gain a half-head verdict. Rebel Star finished on into third place, two lengths in front of Kilrobe, with Skyrena next. Raceaway set the favourite a very difficult task, which was added to by her inclination to run about in the straight. Rebel Star was again not prominent until the closing stages. Kilrobe got away well, but although in the firing line for a good way was never going like a winner. Nightcalm, having his first race for some months, did well for five furlongs. Toro Koura was squeezed back shortly after the start and failed to make up the lost ground. Unfortunate Mishap

Manawai was installed a staunch favourite for the Winchester Trot, and was unlucky not to have justified her position. At the end of a furlong, Oasis broke and fell and Clive Brook crashed over him, while Grattanita and Reservist had to be pulled up, and Manawai lost several lengths betore he escaped from the trouble. Silver Grattan rushed into the lead when the mishap occurred and held a big advantage throughout the back stretch. Manawai, who had to give Silver Grattan a furlong break entering upon the last mile, gradually improved his position, and had the leader's advantage considerably reduced when the straight was reached. The task, however, was beyond him, although he was only four lengths away at the post, Karu was a fair third, two lengths In front of Lorene Val. Surprise In Final The concluding event, the South Canterbury Champion Hack Handicap, resulted in the day’s biggest surprise, the winner, Blazealong, paying nearly half a century for a win. She was one of the last over the early stages and was not prominent until near the end. Whipland again acted as pacemaker, but was In trouble before reaching the straight. Blue Abbey went to the front at the half-mile, and led into the home run from Dranoel, Halt, Great Night, Ferriby, and Grey Silk. Blue Abbey could not carry on and Dranoel was left in charge, and the latter looked to be the winner, but Blazealong appeared from a rear position, and soon overhauling Dranoel won going away. Halt finished well into third place, beating Grey Silk on the post. Ferriby and Blue Abbey were next, Blazealong, who is a half-sister to Blazon, had to put up an outstanding performance to win. and this was her best performance to date. Dranoel had to be content with another minor placing. Halt did well in his first attempt over a middle distance and is likelv to develop into a useful stayer. The diminutive Grey Silk met trouble early and did not get a favourable run at any part. Great Night and Ferriby were big disappointments.
