NATIONAL MILITARY

RESERVE

BIG CROWD WATCHES WORK

IN HAGLEY PARK

Several hundred people watched with the keenest interest more than 600 members of the Canterbury Battalion, National Military Reserve, at their week-end training in Hagley Park yesterday. The men had a big syllabus for the day. For the first time the battalion used loud-speaker equipment in the demonstrations. Three hundred men were handled at one time with the greatest ease, and without strain to the operator, during the erection of a wire apron fence and in trench relief work. Musketry—loading and aiming principally—took up some time in the morning, and the soldiers of the last war, now serving again in the reserve,i showed that they could soon get their former precision back again. Tea and an apple each were welcome to all members *or the luncheon break.

An interesting item in the afternoon’s training was a trench relief. The relief was done first as a burlesque, to show how things ought not to be done on such an important job. Then it was done correctly. The burlesque showed a badly disciplined platoon taking over a section of real trench dug in the park from an equally un- i disciplined party. The big crowd was as interested as the soldiers in the whole demonstration. Snipers and machine-guns gave the relieving party trouble and the climax came when tanks, using flame-throwers —tractors were used from the Botanic Gardens —thundered down on the defenders, who fled. A route march, occupying three-quarters of an hour, with the battalion led by the Christchurch Municipal Band, ended an interesting but bard day’s training.

COLLEGE MASTERS ENLIST

What is believed to be a denominational record has been set by the headmastei's of the three Presbyterian boys’ colleges in New Zealand by the fact that they all hold commissions, for active service in the, army. Lieu-tenant-Colonel J. B. Mawson, M.C., headmaster of St. Andrew’s College, Christchurch, is stationed at Ngaruawahia, commanding a battalion of the 2nd New Zealand Expeditionary Force; Major K. Glasgow,, headmaster of Scots College, Wellington, is in the artillery of the 2nd Echelon; and Captain R. G. McNab, headmaster of John McGlashan College, Dunedin, is with the No. 2 Training Battalion at Burnham.
